7mm-08 reloading recipe that worked
« on: November 06, 2016, 08:33:24 PM »
There has been a couple threads on 7mm-08 reloading over the last year so I figured I would post my recent experience / recipe with working up a load.

Rifle:  Savage Lady Hunter 7mm-08
Hornady brass
42 grains H414
140 Grain Nosler Partition
OACL 2.75"

100 yard target off sand bags.  First three shots are all touching.  Next two were slight fliers, but still well under 1" overall.  I had another group very similar to this with my first trial run so figured it was a keeper.  Now to get the wife behind the trigger to fine tune the scope.

I am looking to purchase a Magnetospeed V3.....as soon as I do, I will post volocities for those who are interested.  For me it is purely for my knowledge as I will take accuracy over speed any day of the week.  I worked loads to the max loads and the groups were not impressive.

If you haven't yet, try some magnum primers in a few. Sometimes you'll get some of the fliers to go away when you use a magnum primer with a spherical powder.

I did this with some .243 test loads using Hornady Superperformance powder.  I went from 1.25 MOA to .75 MOA simply by changing primers from CCI200 to CCI250.

I will load up 10 with mag primers and report back.  Worth a try.  Thanks for the tip.

It's been a long time but at one point there was a "Handloader" article about using ball powders. Among the tips was that more often than not you'll find an increase in accuracy by using magnum primers. The theory being the extra flash gets you a more consistent burn with spherical powders because of how densely it settles in the case.
