pre 64 .264 win mag info

I've got a model 70 that I'm trying to find the date on it but i can't find the serial number. on the rifle it is 538847 but can find it listed on the web. can anyone help me figure it out?

It's a 1961 by the Winchester records. The last serial number made in 1960 was 504257, the last serial number made in 1961 was 545446. So that makes yours a 1961.

I have a pre-64 model 70 .308....It was my Grand Dads....

Being your grand dads it's priceless. I have my grandmas pre 64 308 featherweight and grandpas pre 64 300 win mag. Both killed many many animals. Priceless to me. Wouldn't sell them for anything. Pay tribute to them and the family by keeping them in the field.

not too many years to find a pre-64 .264, as the cartridge came out in '59.  hope it's a westerner, then you can take full advantage of that 26" barrel!

That depends on what sort of condition it's in.  I've seen them where the original owner wasn't happy with the 26 inch barrel and cut it off behind the front sight.  Also seen stocks shortened and recoil pads installed.  The throat was originally for a 2 diameter bullet and usually they were rethroated to remove that.
