What are your plans for 2009 bear?
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:49:11 AM »
If the regs don't change, where and when do you plan to hunt your bear?
What's your weapon of choice?
And are you looking for a trophy or something for table fare?

I already have a guide booked for August for 4 days, Oly Pen.  I'm planning on using a 358 winchester, Ruger Hawkeye, or maybe my .444 marlin.  And, I'm hoping to get a 6 foot or better bear.

I'm considering another trip to Alaska this year, and might try for bear in Prince William Sound or on the Kenai Pen...depending on costs and time.

Im not going to have to worry about the general season after I draw my Spring tag..The 345 pounder i slap my tag on will be enough for the year!!!   And oh the rug is gonna look good!!! :chuckle:

I will be hunting private ground mostly. August through the end of season on the west side. This season I will be trying more predator calling techniques rather than spot and stalk.

Table fare for me. Bear hams are some of the best eating I have had.

take the .444 or the .45-70 and go set the new greens in the clearcuts where I saw multiple bears LAST spring when i didnt get drawn. Might try calling if I dont see what I expect to see.

Change or no change to the bear regs, I'm hunting spring and fall bear in ID, over bait mostly, some spot and stalk and some calling.  I'm looking for a 6+ footer or a really nice color phase.

Good point on the color phase!  I don't have my 08 rug back yet, but I think if I got a substantially different color phase I'd be inclined to get another rug made.

...if I'm lucky.

I have a really nice 6 footer from the Peace River area that has amazing claws and fur that is a red cinnimom, just a beautiful bear I took with my bow a few years ago.

I'm planning on getting a Spring Permit too, but if I don't, my goal is to get one bigger than last year.
