A few firsts for me
« on: May 26, 2018, 02:27:30 PM »
What an epic morning with many firsts! First turkey with a bow, first double, first turkey with a decoy, and first turkey in this certain county! Located a couple groups of turkeys last night and came up with a game plan. I decided to hike up and sit between the 2 roosts. When I set up and it started getting light I noticed 2 mature toms roosted about 75 yds below me. I had my decoy out about 25 yards from me in the open. Finally they decided to pitch down but went the complete opposite way. Not a single gobble. A little frustrated I let out a few soft yelps and clucks. Did that for about 10min off  I and on until I heard something to my left. Looked over and here came 6 jakes! Right to the decoy they went and I was able to draw. Settled my pin and let it fly! He started flipping all over and the other 5 came back to him and started attacking. I couldn’t believe it. This gave me a chance to draw again and stick another bird! I know they’re just jakes but I had a goal to kill one with my bow this year, and after many close calls this season I couldn’t pass the opportunity and I couldn’t be happier! Have to love quality gear! Athens bow, gold tip arrows, radical archery designs broadheads/peep, and phelps game calls!

Three of my first five birds were taken with a shotgun.  Around 20 maybe 25 that followed were all archery.  As long as I can still draw and shoot the bow I expect that will remain my weapon of choice.  It's tough without a blind, but I find that just adds to the excitement and challenge.

Jake's are turkey too - Choot'em!  They taste better and stink less.  If I were smart I'd stop shooting toms and go for jakes exclusively.

Great job Michael
