If you have the time or are already familiar with the sagebrush land just east of the restricted area of the Yakima Indian Reservation I'd give that a try.  Just east of Dry Creek or Mule Dry.
anywhere on the res is permit only!! :bdid:

YEP!!! That's a bad idea! A friend of mine got a $150 ticket for hunting that area a couple winters ago.

You have always had to have a Yakima Indian Reservation hunting or fishing permit for those activities on the reservation.  The only thing you have to watch out for is the area restricted for non-tribal members. I've hunted and fished all over the rest of it with no problems.
then youve been lucky. you cab hunt birds in nonrestricted area's with a permit but to hunt predators you have to be hand selected by a tribal liaison. and the permit is renewable every year but kills must be recorded

The game warden told my friend NO hunting fur bearing animals without a special permit and was nice enough to write the number to call to apply on the back of the $150 ticket. Ha Ha

I did grow up over there and hunted the reservation the whole time I lived there.  I do have to admit that has been some years ago.  The game warden you refer to was that tribal or state?  I was trying to remember if the state classified coyote as furbearers or not, can't recall.  Where was it your friend got the ticket at?

i grew up in the yakima valley and i've hunted the rez for yotes for years. The yotes are everywhere i've had days where i just drove around and saw 15 to 20 yotes. The problem with this time of year is that most people including myself have already been hunting the rez all winter. So if you want to drive around don't expect a standing shot, instead you should just keep on driving and set up and call. Yes it is illegal to shoot coyotes on the rez, but i've been stopped by the wardens numerous times, and their take on things is basically don't shoot the bobcats or coons. the wardens don't care about the coyotes for some odd reason. if you need to know any more info just let me know.

The game wardens you are talking about are they tribal or state?

My friend got his ticket from a tribal warden, he was calling coyotes off Tuley Rd (Satus area). Some of the tribe believes that coyotes are sacred, probably depends on the wardens beliefs if you get a ticket or not. There are coyotes EVERYWHERE on the rez!

Great thread! Thanks for the information - being a newbie myself this answered a lot of questions before I had a chance to ask.
