Working the Westside?
« on: October 22, 2007, 09:36:17 AM »
So I'm looking for some advice on how to hunt the westside this weekend...
After a less than stellar weekend not making it to my usual spot in the Eastern Wheat my partner and I crash landed at my cabin in the western portion of the Teanaway GMU.  We scouted on Friday, and setup to hunt Saturday morning.  Chased tracks for about 3 miles before they left the snow and we lost the trail.  I was a good time, but not what I would call effective hunting.

Just wondering how I should hunt this type of terrain and cover this weekend?  I know the Teanaway is closed, but not the Snoqualmie unit, so I'll head in there.  I'm hoping for more snow, but assuming I don't get and I haven't scouted these areas at all how should I approach this hunt?  I'll be going at it alone this weekend and will not be letting anyone rain on my parade.

Let the suggestions fly.  PS, I'm not opposed to taking suggestions on locations to hit up either! PMs are cool, and believe me secrets will be safe, I've pretty much decided to only hunt alone next year.  Thanks in advance everyone, you have all had great advice for me on previous topics and I'm sure it'll continue.

No help huh?  Guess I'm asking a bit much, or maybe nobody hunts in there this late?

I hunted the Snoq last year some, it would help if you could hit it during the week, hike in to a likely cut and slowly glass it/ work it over. A lot of pressure on the roads there, even though it's fee access. Like all hunting, do some leg work and get in where people have to do a good deal of hiking to get to and you'll find deer, that country is thick, though. I like to study aerial photos of clearcuts -good resource.

hunt it slowly, piece by piece, with your bino's pick it apart. make a grid and pick each little section of that grid apart. it's super thick. you're looking for pieces of a deer...i'm sure you've heard this before. take it very slowly and glass it till it hurts.
burn some more blisters in your heels and get away from the roads. get past a mile in away from everybody else.

I agree with armed scouting. Look for fresh buck rubs. Be prepared to see nothing but ferns and blackberry tangles in front of your face instead of pleasant open forest  :chuckle:
