Reloading for a .257 Weatherby mag
« on: September 04, 2018, 12:55:12 PM »
Anyone have any good load info for this caliber?  It shoots factory 110 Accubonds around 1/2-3/4" groups.  I have tried R22 with 69.5 and 69gr loads.  Both seem to be a little hot as the bolt gets sticky.  These loads both produced 1 1/4" groups.  This is unacceptable to me.  I am seating the bullets at the same depth as the factory Accubonds.  I don't recall what that is right now.  I am thinking if trying a different powder.  Any suggestions?
Thanks

IMR 7828 has worked well for me in the past, especially velocity wise. I settled on H1000 across the bored for most of my magnums. Good velocity, accuracy and a temp tolerant stable powder. It's hard to go wrong with H1000.

If you have RL25 it would be worth a try

My dad had a Mk V 257 WM for a few years but if I recall he shot the 115's, they didn't have the Accubonds back then.  Pretty sure he used RL25 but they didn't have some of the powders they do now so I think there are much better powders available now.  My experience with Weatherby cases has always been they prefer full cases so I'd think the slower powders like RL33, Retumbo, or H1000 would be better choices than RL22.

If it's Nosler factory ammo that shoots well for you give Nosler a call and talk to one of their techs and see if they can tell you what powder they're using.  It's been a few years since I messed around with any Weatherby stuff but I've talked to their techs before and they were always pretty good about telling me what powder they use.  I recall them telling me they use a lot of IMR 7828 in their Weatherby ammo.
