So, here is a question for you coug hunters...

I have tried predator calling for cougs with minimal luck (I havent seen one...who knows if one came in or not), but I know its legal to bait for them, so my question is, what bait would you use?

I read on here somewhere someone tied some chickens in a tree and they disappears over the weekend...

What other methods would u use? I can figure some sort of fresh meat, hanging in a tree...but thats bout it...

Skunks, coons, possums and weasels with also make a chicken disapear.

I am quite surprised that baiting is legal. Are you sure of that? I thought baiting and hound hunting were outlawed in WA in 1996 or so. Rufous.

I just looked in the regs again, and it specifically mentions hounds and bait in the bear regs, but in the cougar regs, it only mentions dogs....nothing about bait.

I found it interesting as well, when I first saw this topic,then I went and looked in the regs, and sure enough it doesn't say jack about bait, when it comes to cougars...

I would presume the legality or illegality would fall under being inhumane to the animal being used as bait. Live bait generally being illegal in Washington for anything would be another thing to consider. Cats are not scavengers so giving them something to kill and eat would be the ticket and that would be where your problem lies.

It's an intriging subject. Are their habits so different from say leopards or jaguars? I wonder what a goat or road kill deer tied up in a tree would do? I know lions normally cover their kills and come back and feed. Be interesting to see if you could bait one like an African cat. I watched a guy sitting in a blind kill a leopard that way a couple of weeks ago. Would be an interesting way to try and take a lion.

I was wondering the same thing. That's the main way they hunt leopards in Africa. Dead critter hung in a tree. It'd be pretty damn cool to hunt cougars that way... if it viable and legal.

I believe it is not illegal, therefore I believe it is legal, now viable, not sure but might have to give it a try next year.

thats crazy...i always assumed that hound hunting and baiting applied to both bears and cougar. nice job...something to look into!

Call the WDFW and ask them all these questions. They'd probably be happy to tell you where there is a problem cougar terrorizing people's pets. In such a circumstance I'd imagine a cat like that would be easier to bait.

I've been reading a book on Africa hunting. The author devoted a whole chapter to Leopards. It sounds like, at least for Leopards, that there's more to it then just hanging a dead animal in a tree an waiting. Sure sounds like it would be an interesting experiment if nothing else. Assuming we've all read the reqs correctly I wonder what kinds of bait would be both legal to use and preferred by ol' tabby? I seriously doubt that it's legal to use live chickens or goats.

Wow this is an OLD topic, One I have looked into quite a bit. I have a much different perspective now, but it's not something I want to discuss on an open forum in this state.

Seems like anyting I enjoy doing eventually becomes illegal.

Back when we use to bait alot for bears we would get cougars to come in to our call bait. Our call bait was putrified meat, meat that was so rotten it would turn to soup. The cats would come in the first couple a days we had the call baits out.

A cougar will feed on a road kill deer. A friend has pictures of one feeding on a road kill that was several weeks old. Some of you old timers here will remember the thread in the trailcam forum.

i watched a show on the animal planet where a this guy and his family picked up a dead deer off of the road and used it to bait in cougar. the guy sent up a tent/blind next to it so he could film the cat, and it worked. ive thought about doing it, but i dont want to look like a weirdo throwing road kill in the back his truck. isnt taking road kill illegal though?

Tony04....yes it is illegal. The person I mentioned above has permission from the neccessary agencies to do so.

A trapper I knew told me a long time ago that the best bait for cougar is house cats.

tony, everything is illegal in this state! Soon I hear they are going to outlaw breathing while hunting. You'll have to hold your breathe until the end of the season....gotta love washington!

what about dogs? i cant stand my wifes dog and im temped to shoot everyday. cougar bait?

baiting for cougar is legal i was told by a local game warden.you just can't hunt over your bait at night and dead calves work well.
