Grant County getaway
« on: October 24, 2018, 02:12:46 PM »
I noticed there was a three day period in E. Wash this week between deer and elk season that I could hunt coyotes without having to wear orange or possibly interfere with deer hunting. So, wanting to take a break from blacktail hunting here on the westside, off I went to Moses Lake area. Hunted this morning. Called in two coyotes, lost the first one by letting him come in too close. Had passed up a chance to shoot him as he came in. Second coyote was further out, took a long shot, missed but caught him as he ran. I should have worked him in a bit closer.  It's nice to have proper site selection and good calling work out as well as it did this morning.

I am fortunate to be retired, allows me to make trips like this often. I try to get over to E. Wa about once a month. I have a slightly higher success rate in E. Wa.  I was particularly happy with todays results since I have gotten skunked at this spot several times, even though the amount of sign and conditions told me there were lots of coyotes. The weather and scenery were superb at 0700 this morning.

Places with lots of sign also have lots of pressure in eastern Washington which means educated coyotes. One place I hunt has lots of sign and a huge rabbit and quail population. Coyote vocalizations are the only thing that work.

Ricks hand calls are what I use. Can't say enough good about his calls looks and performance. Coyote vocals are what I used, some distress and female howling. It doesn't always work but it sure worked well this time.
