Rifle rebarreling Prices

I am looking into having one of my rifles re barreled .
Only contacted one shop so far and was quoted approx $850.
This includes clambering,bedding etc.
Is this the going price for this service ?
Been years since I have had work done at a shop.

I think it depends on barrel and what kind of specs you want for the barrel.
Barrels alone can range all over the place.  If the chambering is unique and they have to buy or make odd ball reamers that can get expensive.  Bluing, sights, crown, etc.

I have one in the shop right now and the price is considerably more than three years ago. I am paying $1200 plus I provide the barrel. I trust the guys work or else I would have shopped around. Bedding is $200 extra. My stock has a bedding block so I am passing on that.

Seems like I paid $1100 and the gunsmith ordered the barrel for that price three years ago.

Just changing from a 30/06 to 35 Whelen.
Remington 700
Gunsmith has the reamer.
Is recommending stainless 22" barrel.
I thought this would be an option to buying another rifle but it may not be.

If going from 30-06 to 35 Whelen, just rebore it.  Ship it to JES in Cottage Grove, OR.  $225.  Unless he's buried it's usually just a few weeks turn around.

Many of us on here have done that and it works well.  Jesse has taken my 30-06 to 35 Whelen and my 30-30 to 356 Winchester.  Both shoot very well.  I've been to his shop in person multiple times, as I dropped mine off since I was in that area.  Great guy.

If the barrel is standard contour, might wanna check out JES for a rebore.  Huge savings, looks factory.  I think @angryperch had one done by them a while ago, think he was happy with it.  35 Whelen is one of their most popular rebore jobs.

Reboring is not an option.
The barrel is only 16 1/2" long now.
It was an experiment that is a joy to carry but not very efficient for the 30/06 class case.

I would give Benchmark Barrels in Arlington a call.  They did an awesome job for me.  I shipped them my barreled action.  They trued up the action, cut a new barrel, installed a brake, and cerakote.  I think I paid 1,100 and it was fairly quick turnaround (2-3 months).

Some of the barrel companies (Shaw, Hart, etc.) will also do an install for you if you ship them your barreled action.

You'll still be over $600 for barrel+install+barrel finish going that route.  More if you do more services.   The Shaw barrel itself for Rem 700 in 22" sporter is around $220-$350 depending on chromoly vs. stainless and type of finish.   There are cheaper barrel options like Green Mountain, etc. and there are significantly more expensive options for barrels as well (and thicker contours). 


So if the $850 includes the barrel, then that price isn't out of line.

For stainless, I think the price is probably what I'd expect.  I'd guess the barrel blank is probably $450 ish, then the other work adds up.

Looking like that is a pretty good deal for 800-900.
I do have two loads I have worked up for it,one hunting load and a target load that shoots like a 243.
It does not like factory loads.

Ballpark I see is $350-450 install. Barrel is $350-$500.  So right in the ballpark at $700-$950.

McGowen could set you up with stainless Remage w/ nut for less than $600 and then you could change it yourself next time.  I'd do that

If you're not attached to it you may get it threaded then sell it.  Someone with a suppressor should not be turned off by the 16.5 barrel.  Assume you get about about $500 for it which gets you within a couple hundred of a stainless 35 Whelen.

Well I thought about and researched doing the same thing...….ended up buying a NIB 35 Whelen CDL SF off of GunBroker!
