Saw limping buck tonight
« on: February 07, 2020, 01:57:57 AM »
We are in the final days of the extended doe season in Kansas. Certain zones are actually done already. Tonight while doe hunting, I saw a buck walk out that had a nasty limp. He didn’t have a bunch of noticeable weight loss, but was skinny for sure. What would you do if in that situation?

I felt the right thing to do was put him down, but I sure as hell don’t want to shoot a deer out of season. I didn’t have my phone to call our county fish and game office either. I ended up just watching him.

Leave him alone.  I watched a buck get hit by a car two years ago and snap his hind leg in half.  We had about three feet of snow that spring and I'd watch him walk through the snow struggling, thought for sure he'd die off.  He's still alive today.  Hind leg swings in the wind but he can run and I've even seen him mount a doe.
