Centurion,
I think he may have killed his first one that morning with "conventional" tactics.  Second bird seemed to be a target of opportunity...
Still, good advice.  I think if most of us could have benfitted from some good mentoring when we were that age.  I know I spent a lot of my youth chasing around targets of opportunity, when I should have been perfecting my skills.  I think there is a life lesson there, but not sure... :chuckle:

Oh...I agree.  Like I said above....lots of folks have been there done that....like the ol' sayings goes...."Youth is wasted on the young".  You just don't realize how true that is until you're older...lol.

I was just trying to express to him that the real satisfaction of taking these birds is different than the way he did on the second one.  I'd be the last one to impose my ethics on anyone....just hope I can puish in the right direction is all.

I remember in the Blues during the mid 90's all the new hunters above the Tucannon chasing turkeys like chukars.
I'd be willing to bet that any of those guys still hunting today are not pursuing that technique.  Too funny....they learned real fast that that was a recipe for being unsuccessful.   There was an occasional lucky one...but few and far between.  Still remember watching them way up there on the hillside and laughing to myself.... :chuckle:

alecvg congrats..how big?  Why did you miss?  How old are ya?  Good job.

I don't know why I missed, it was freakin hilarious though, I was walking up the road I shot my first one the morning before on (I could have shot both opening morning within 10 seconds of each other, but I had only bought one tag), and spotted a hen in the woods about 100 yds away, so in my jeans and shoes, I walked through the knee deep snow drift and got behind a tree, i moved from tree to tree when ever it looked away or moved, I was in an area of recently logged timber, so there were logs everywhere!  Anyway, I moved up, and the hen got spooked and started going faster, when suddenly I saw the whole flock... running, so I took off sprinting after them as fast as I could, and they are fast sons of ******! I cought up to them and they circled back to the main road, and the big tom strutted and flew down the road, so I sprinted after it, and it landed in some thick trees, so after 5 min. I had spotted it, and took the shot at 30 yds. which wasnt an easy one, and missed, and it flew away. :bash:  Oh well, I got my first turkey and am happy!  And had a great hunt!  Hopefully I can fill two more tags over here on the west side, if I can figure out where the darn turkeys are!  I am 15 by the way.

Alecvg...congrats..I want to see the beard man...got any pics?  While you are young try and learn how to expand your hunting tactics...running after birds isn't the most effective or the safest especially with a loaded weapon.  I would also like to remind you I believe you can only fill one tag on he westside.  I assume you were hunting private land with the fenced tree in the background...what county? Stevens?  Good job..

I like your pic got any more?

Sorry, I don't have any pics of the beard, and I already butchered and dumped it.  I know, running at the birds wasn't the best or smartest way to do it, but it was my first time ever hunting them, and I have no idea what works and what doesn't on turkeys.  No, I was hunting public land in Okanogan County.

I appreciate the advise, I really do.  Any by the way, I almost had him, my bad tactics almost worked...  :chuckle:

Congrats Alec ... Just from the safety standpoint of running with a loaded gun alone I have to agree with Yelp & WaCent  :yike: !  I also agree that you will find it more rewarding to call one in or bushwack/ambush one.  I have actually "patterned" birds by watching them fly down and seeing what direction they were going and how high on the hill ... rather than running at them, I skirted around and ahead of them on another road, then waited for them to come on around the mountain ... never even had to call ... dead at 10 ft. Just be safe out there ... the only good hunts are the one you return safe from ...

I understand what you guys are saying, and agree, it wasn't the smartest thing I have ever done.  And also, we did try to call them in that morning, and it was working, but this beeing our first time turkey hunting, we bought a cheepo call, and it broke that morning, we were planning on calling them in that evening.

Some great looking toms were harvested last weekend!! Congrats to all of the youth that made it out.  Hope to see more of the reports and pictures coming in.  Really enjoy reading about your adventures.   :yeah:

Ya, I am doing a fan, I didn't really measure the beard, so I have no idea... probaly kinda stupid of me to dump it.. but oh well.  If i had to guess I would say three or four inches.

Yeah, keep the beards man.  Before long you will have a rearview mirror to hang them from.  They look cool there... :chuckle:

Yeah, Keep the Fan, spurs and beards and try to keep them labeled, so you don't forget which goes with which!!  Like I have done over the last few years  :dunno:
