Hello everyone getting into trail cams had 1years ago for 1 season.
Got a couple questions
Heard something about needing to format the sd cards?
Or can you just put them in?
Once the card is full can you delete pics or do you just re-use and the pics are just copied over?
Thanks for any info.

Yes on formating the sd card. I do it everytime i put a card in . it erases all the pictures on card
Yes on reuseing the card. like said above formating erases them.
I carry a card reader with me, set the camera up and walk in front of it to make sure its the height that will get the animal your after. that way you won't be disappointed when you come back.
also make sure no  tree limbs that will set it off.

Make sure you look at your cameras setup also. The cams that I have will not take if I insert the sd card with the cam turned on it will not take pics. The plus is they do not require a format.

I recommend this card reader. BoneView has its own app for viewing pictures too. And U can format from the app also. Easiest most streamlined way to check pix. Like others have said, format the card every time!

It’s really nice to be able to check your cams in the field. VS just swapping out cards. U can see what kind of activity you’re getting or if there’s a branch causing your camera to trip.

I picked up a couple lick boxes and python cables does any one lag bolt the lock box to the tree also or just use the cable?
Thinking about doing both

I bolt them or cable them but never both.
I prefer bolting them in boxes since the bears seem to like chewing on my cameras and it keeps them from getting moved around.

I screw them to the tree (that way you do not have to reposition after checking) and cable lock too.

Always leg bolt or wood screws into the tree. Never use python locks they can be cut so easy and never seem to get them tight enough

I put 1 of my cams up this weekend lockbox,lag bolted and cable locked about 9ft up but now I'm wondering if I pointed it down enough lol.

Something I've learned recently is to put your phone flush to the front of the camera then take a picture. That'll show exactly what your camera is lookin at. Be sure to use the "test" function too so it's looking far enough down at the ground to catch what you're looking for

Camera on your phone is a great tip never thought of that.
I used the set up mode and had my daughter walk around and the light was going on like they said it would but we'll see

On my bushnells it erases the pictures that were on that card so its clear. I've also tried without and had the card not work then formatted the card and it will work in the camera.
How do you delete your pictures?It is a option in the submenu in the camera.
In bushnells instructions it says to always format cards that have been used in other cameras. Don't know why but thats what i've always done.

I had a cam out once for a 4 month soak.
At that time I was using my laptop as a card reader anyway ,I had a 1000 or more pics on it .but every time I would try to copy the file my laptop would say it's corrupted .I started formatting the cards and it never happened again.
I have ran a lot of cams with out formatting the card .But that one time not being able to view those pics rub me the wrong way.
If someone else is viewing or deleting pics off your card can corrupt a sd card also.

Alot of cams have formatting the card as options right on the cam .So now I just copy the pics to my phone.then use the cam to format the card easy peasy.

I've always just put new sd cards in and deleted any pics later that I didn't want with my pc and put them right back in.

Well if it works for you don't change it.About the time you do ,you'll check a camera with big tracks going by in the snow and the card won't work. Ask me how i know.

I had a couple of the kind where you wedge the 35 mm camera between 2 foam pads. You had to line it up with a plunger that hit the button on top. The camera was virtually unprotected from the weather. Then you had to wait for photo development to see IF anything was on it. SO much better now.

Long before that one I built a box/plunger type that ran sewing thread from the plunger arm down through a eyelet I'd screw into the tree, then across the trail to another tree. Got one picture of an elk before I abandoned that design.

Thanks for this recommendation! I just got the Boneview card reader for my iPhone and tried it out yesterday when I checked my trail cams, and I bought it because of this post. Works great! What an improvement over how I used to check my cameras. I haven't really used trail cameras for a 4 or 5 years now, but I decided to put out a few now because of the quality elk permit I drew. With it being a two hour drive to where I park and begin hiking in, it sure was nice to be able to view all the photos and videos on my phone and then format the card and put it right back in the camera.
