Selkirk white tail. NEED HELP! (GMU 113)

Hey guys,

My old man and I will be doing late muzzle in 113. We got skunked in general season, and are really wanting to get on some white tail. I've tried searching the forum, and haven't found many threads of recently with information on the area.

We have never hunted the area, and I'm curious as to what areas will we have the best chances. I'm not trying to get in anyone's honey holes. Just not wanting to waste our time hunting low white tail population areas. I'll be coming up from Yakima and don't have much opportunity to go up and scout before hand.

We are both in pretty good shape and are willing to work for our bucks.

-Generally good areas to hunt?
-How is the deer population looking in Selkirk?

I know this forum is filled with knowledgeable and friendly outdoorsmen, and i'm really hoping you guys can help out.

I would hunt that 2015 burn area east of north baldy mountain.  There's a bunch of animals in that every fall getting fresh greens, lots of food.  The timber on those NE slopes is thick, but it seems to get less pressure.  Same as any strategy for me, find the does in November and bucks will come.  Good luck out there!

The deer population in 113 isn’t what it used to be, but with that said they are still there. Find areas where there isn’t a ton of vehicle traffic and look for tracks. Hopefully there will be snow on the ground to help with that. The baldy area rutn mentioned gets hit pretty hard, but there are animals there. Good luck and make sure ya let us know if you get something.

Depending on the snow you may not be able to reach it. Pyra mid Pass one of the ways to get to the east side of North Baldy, is about  4900’. I would hop on google earth and start doing some e-scouting if you haven’t already.

My oldest son has hunted it for the last 2 years.  The Le Cler creek area they locked gates for access for winter habit. That puts lots of the area inaccessible.

My route to that burn is via Idaho 57 then west up the Upper West Branch Priest River. There is pressure and it’s a historically muzzy unit, but just like anywhere most guys are gonna hunt 1/2 mile from the road. Get up into some roadless and hunt near the edges of the burn. Ridgeratt suggestion is also great. LeClerk Creek can be productive. I’ve hunted around Bead Lake too, came in from Idaho and there’s good hunting in that area. I should mention all of my hunts up there were in September and for elk but had deer tag in pocket.  It can be thick as wet side on the north slopes unless you get into logged or burnt areas. But that’s also the bedding areas too! Have fun and bring chains.

Burn Southwest of Baldy had 3 to 1 wolf to deer tracks this time last year. Didn't see a single deer in a week of being in there. Only a handful of nocturnally laid tracks. Just FYI.

I have some cams up that way, everytime it snows i have wolves show up. But there are def some nice bucks in there. I haven't check them in 2 months but will be up there this weekend.......I'll let you know what i see.

Where are the roads gated up? From what I could find online it's that West Le Cler Creek roads that's gated. Is that correct? Is the East road open???

The east fork you can get all the way through to Idaho and the west branch will punch through dry canyon to Sullivan lake road. There are a bunch of gated roads on the Stimson properties and they were actively logging during early muzzleloader.

I did a ride along and we saw very little sign of critters.
