I want a new gun and I have a few ideas, but my main two choices are the Ruger wrangler or the heritage rough rider, just a basic single action 22 for mushroom picking and fishing in the fall up in the mountains, basically a small critter gitter and a plinker, nothing fancy just a basic small caliber pistol
Then I got to thinking, what about a black powder gun?
Years ago I bought a Ruger old army for 200$ and thought I’d flip it but only sold it for 250$ (to the local gun shop) and lost out, should have kept
It, and while I know that’s the cream of the crop for black powder revolvers, I’m likely never to find one cheap again, would love to get one again....
But I’ve seen some 1858 army and some of the navy pistols that look quite affordable and sure are sweet to look at
Any thoughts on getting one for a small game gun and a plinker?
Personal defense is secondary on this one, it sure beats a sharp stick and I’m sure if I ever had to defend myself the fireball and smoke would probably scare the crap out of whatever came at me but was thinking it could be a good utility gun?
Any thoughts on these things?
I get black powder has its issues and can be a pain sometimes but for a gun you load once for the day how bad can it be?
Would some of the larger 44cals have enough oomph to subdue a WA sized black bear? Obviously not my first choice, I’m sure a hot loaded Ruger old army would be fine but what about a 1858 Remington?
I see there are a lot of companies making these things these days, and with the Internet being what it is, there aren’t many places to check out a BP gun of this type but figure there is also something to be said about the PB guns being able to just get shipped to your door with no paperwork required but I’d love some input
