Wolverine
« on: April 14, 2021, 07:21:06 PM »
Had a once in a lifetime event Tuesday am headed up to the mountain near Mt. Rainier.
Driving up I caught movement coming from the right side of my vehicle, after first glance I realized what
I was seeing, A Wolverine! I slowed to a stop and it ran right in front of the car and never broke speed.
They found the first reproductive female with two kits last year in the park for the first time in more than a 100 years.
Just happened to be in the right spot at the right time. Pretty awesome!!!

Wolverines are cool critters and rare sitings.  Saw one two years ago while elk hunting in NE Utah, made the trip!

My friend lives in Utah, and has heard people report sightings in the NE area, But he was not sure
they inhabit that area. After a little research, sure enough, they still have them.
There is a great video on Net Flix, Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom,
Check it out.

It was in the Franklin Basin and we were actually about a mile into Idaho, pretty cool siting.  Looked like a juvenile, we ran after it across the meadow, it didn't know we were following it until it stopped and looked back at about 30 yards and growled at us!  Close enough for me, fierce at that range.

I saw one on the RR grade on Mount Baker in 2018.  I contacted the WDFW biologists and they sent me some photos.

The one in the tree was taken around Mt Rainer, and the one in the snow was taken near Mt Baker

Saw one in the GPW last September during High Buck. I initially thought it was easily the #1 Boone and Crocket marmot before the reality of the situation became self-evident a few seconds later through the binos. VERY cool to watch it scamper around doing its thing before it disappeared over the ridgeline. Not the first time it or its relatives have been seen in the same general area. ;)

When I saw the one on Mount Baker, I also thought it was a super tall marmot!  They look very similar.  It was running like a ferret though.
