Have you been able to buy 12 gauge ammo for turkeys?  Any of the new TSS?  The shelves are empty at Cabela's.  I still have some copper coated lead  also some older shells that don't say what they are.  Can I use them or would I get a ticket?     I'd hate to finally get a turkey and have to give it up.

It is illegal to hunt turkeys with a weapon other than shotgun or muzzleloading shotgun shooting #4 or smaller shot.  (From the Wdfw regulations)

As long as it's under #4 shot it makes no difference on lead, steel, tungsten.  The only place you might have to use steel is on the waterfowl areas.

Actually your backwards you can shoot 4 shot or smaller 5,6,7 or 9.  The smaller the number the larger the shot.  I know kind of backwards.  I shoot tss 9 shot in .410 which is way smaller than 4 shot and legal.  2 shot illegal becaue it is bigger than 4 shot.

Is it 4 shot or smaller if it is shoot away except on certain WDFW managed land they require non toxic shot.

I brought this up to the department and the acknowledge they are wrong.  Smaller is backwards with shot size in shotguns.  4 shot is legal.  Recommendation is 4,5,6 shot on department website in old school lead turkey loads.  I guess the question would be what does everyone consider smaller the number size of the shot or the shot size?

I was curious of the reason why.
Why can't we use down to like number 2 shot or BB size shot.
People use those for geese and waterfowl all the time and there about the same size bird.
Only thing I can figure is maybe safety reasons or something.
It just makes sense that a round used for geese would work for turkey.
On another note ,nobody said they was that smart at WDFW.

Would going down in shot size to BB and up ,really hurt anything?
I'm asking for a friend :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

It is a safety reason because your shooting those birds in flight and not on the ground.  Plus i would use smaller shot because it is more pellets at least for turkeys on a pretty small target.  I do see your reasoning though.  That is the most common reg in most states for turkey.   Nothing bigger than 4 shot.

Thanks for reply
Ya I figured it had something to due with safety.
The ammo company's have really focused in on it.
It might make those ammo company's sad if you could use waterfowl ammo at ALOT cheaper price.

I read those regs.  What it is saying that it is illegal to shoot anything other than shotguns or muzzle loading shotguns that shoot #4 shot or smaller.  The illegal part is eluding to is rifles.  At the end of course it says archery equipment and crossbows are legal.

I know a hunter ed instructor and his buddy got shot by a kid because his dad saw the buddys blaze orange hat while the intructor and his buddy were standing in the middle of a forest road.  Was face and neck for both.  His buddy was shedding layers as they were walking to their spot.  Daytime.

I'm not positive ,maybe you have seen this and I'm not sure if it's true.
But are there some turkey shells on the market that will put like size 2 and size 4 shot in the same shell, write size 4 on the shell .
It's just a rumor I heard from a friend ,don't really know if there is any truth to that.
Basically they put size 4 on the shell or box cause that's what mostly is the shot size in that shell.

I'm not gonna name any company names.
But when I was patterned my son's shotgun with about 4 different brands of "turkey ammo" on paper plates.
There was one brand that seemed like there was different size holes in the plate. Which lead me to believe there wad different size shot in there.

Remington made a duplex load 4x6. You could mow the lawn to 40 yards with them. Still have 3 or 4 boxes of them. But I quit hunting turkies in this state just got tired of nimrods stalking in on a setup.
