Resizing brass 30-06 to 25-06 questions
« on: September 02, 2022, 05:40:47 PM »
Hi guys,

I've tried resizing the 30-06 to 25-06 on a few cases.

After the resize I trimmed and examined the results.

What I've found is it fits in the chamber of the rifle.

What I've noticed is a slight bulge in the brass just below the neck.

How are you guys doing similar conversions? And I'm concerned about the bulge. I neck sized it with Lee neck sizer afterwards and it fits like I said but want to reach out to others with more experience and welcome comments.

Should I anneal before this process to eliminate the problem?

Thanks

A bulge or dimple?  I'm not sure how you can have a bulge as the die would prevent that?

If it's a dimple, check your die.  If there is junk or extra lube in there I get the same thing and it resolves itself after a good cleaning.

It's definitely not a dimple. I've see that when using too much case lube. I'll take photos if necessary. However it's very slight and may not show up in photos so well. Bulge is small just below neck and above shoulder. So slight.

Thanks for the response.

I'm wondering if I can just shoot it out and it will form. But checking in with people because I'm careful

Have you played with the sizing length - looks like maybe you could back die of a bit or will it not chamber?

It fits in the chamber and is technically Saami spec on shoulder and oal.
I use an Rcbs precision mic to verify shoulder. It's not a size issue other than minor deformity.

I think I'll shoot a few today

I resize a few different cases off the 30-06 both up and down, since 1964.  If it fits and the bolt closes on an empty shell then I load with which ever powder I got the most with for that caliber and shoot them.  Accuracy will be the pits, but the shell will confirm to the chamber and you are ready to load for accuracy now.
The only time I will discard a case if I get a crimp, that will not come out, it is from too much case lube.  Just remember when sizing down a slow and steady push and pull on the ram arm will result in good cases.

Good luck

Pretty well covered.
You are basically fire forming. Sometimes they are still fairly accurate. It will be interesting if the fireformed cases have the bulge.
They should be a near perfect representation of your chamber.

That's what I thought about fire forming too. Didn't get a chance to shoot. It basically creates reverse runout below the neck and above shoulder. I noticed the necks are about 1-2 thousands fatter in brass size on the neck compared to regular 25-06 brass but not concerned about that since everything fits. That measurement is ball micrometer measuring brass thickness only

It's great to check in here since my mentor is no longer around. Appreciate all the responses. Great crew here.as usual
