Transition from Archery to Rifle

Questions from an Alaskan boy…
What do elk generally do from archery season to rifle season? This is my first archery season hunting in the Idaho panhandle. Mostly unit 6 around St. Maries with a little in 5,7 and 9 around Avery to the MT border. I’m all over the elk right now during bow season but what should I expect in anther month? My daughters are going to be rifle hunting. Do I just assume they will all be miles from the rd and unattainable in the steepest and deepest canyons I can find? Or do they really stay in the same area and just become quiet and or more nocturnal?

What are your thoughts?

The mature bulls will split off from the herd at the sound of the first shots, If not before.

Younger bulls will stick with the herds for a bit.

Mature bulls will head to the steep and deep holes.

I think the herds tend to leave their flat breeding areas, but still tend to hang out in fairly assessable areas.

I hunt close to 7 and the elk are doing exactly what they are doing in mid September where we hunt. I hunt them like I’m hunting archery with calling. Big bulls have been bugling and with cows every year. We have had bulls bugling into early November . If you are hunting high the only concern is snow come October and that’s been the major issue for us . If it only snow a few inches it doesn’t move them, get10+ and they are gone.

Pretty much doing what they are doing now.   Some variation if we get some moisture but they typically go until general modern or until the permit boys for big bull trmp around for a day or two. (here in wa)

In the Panhandle, youd be amazed where they pocket up.   THey are often closer to the roads than you think.  One of the biggest bulls I've ever imagined, I was chasing moose and ran into him with a huge herd of cows.  It was the night before the opener.  Honestly the closest I have ever been tempted to cross the line.   I always carry my bugle when I am chasing moose the first two weeks in October over there.

In those units I see the elk 100 yards off the road, and well hidden, from the 1000's of dudes blasting around in UTV's trying to find a bull standing on a road, its amazing

Then one dude will get into a herd of cows when that season opens, blast the lead cow (which befuddles the herd), then drop 6 more cows for his buddies (of which there's only 4) and leave the untagged cows to rot on the mountian.

There is a lot of truth to this.  Unfortunately.

I find it hard to believe that the people in said hunting party don’t know a few people who could go to Walmart real quick and buy tags to cover those extra cows.

Not too Mention that I’m pretty sure it’s still illegal to shoot an animal you don’t already have a tag for. Sad seeing those animals go to waste. I’ve reported three clearly poached elk to WDFW in the last couple years and never received a reply
