I hope you mean ground squirrels 270, the tree variety are protected...

...and just in case you think I'm being "preachy", ask me how I know.... :bash:

Yep.  I was you're age.  Had no idea they were protected.  It was driving me nuts in my deer stand, so I climbed down, backed up about 50 yards to make it "sporting" and exploded it with a 130 gr from my .270.  THen I felt bad about wasteing him, so I found the tail and kept it for fly tying.
Later I got stopped by the game warden.  He saw my squirrel tail (obviously fresh) and asked if I shot it.

"Uh huh" I said.

"With that?" he asked, pointing at my .270

"Uh huh".

That was when he whipped out his little ticket book and $200 later I had learned my lesson.  I actually needed a waiver to join the Army because of that incident.  :bash:

Judo is about the only way to go.  They are so lethargic......  Still faster than me though.  I had one on top of a steel fence post.  It was cool watching him slowly climb down.  I had one on a rock ledge withthe perfect sun and unbelievable backdrop, but I was too slow.
