"Terminal Performance" Study
« on: December 14, 2022, 04:53:08 PM »
Anyone else get this email? Supposedly a study being done to gauge the terminal performance of bullets on deer, elk, or other big game animals.  Maybe I was only sampled for bear, but it seems fishy with everything going on surrounding bear that it'd be the species selected.  The link to the form is here: https://portlandstate.qualtrics.com/CP/File.php?F=F_b10et2OmX53ZjmK

Maybe it's my paranoia with the way the radicals have attempted to take over game management, but a study out of Portland that asks for all the gory details of the shots and shot placement is not something I'm excited to see published in a study.  If a bullet manufacturer was doing a study, great, happy to share info. With these folks... Heck no!

Hello Alan,

You are being asked to participate in a survey because you purchased a general season black bear tag this hunting season.

My name is Leland Brown, and I am a researcher on the project. Our team would like to invite you to participate in a survey recording the outcome of your big game harvest. Please take a look in advance so you can review the requested information. I realize that during the time you harvest an animal it can be very busy and knowing the questions in advance can help make the process easier. Filling out the survey will take no longer than 20 minutes and you will be entered to win one of fifty $100 gift cards for your time.

Please follow this link to take the survey: www.bit.ly/AmmoPerformance

If you are out of service and unable to access the survey, I have also created a link to a printable paper data sheet that you can fill out to record your information in the field. Once back in service please use the data sheet to enter the information into the online survey.

No record of your identity will be requested, and responses will be kept confidential.

This study has been determined exempt by the PSU Internal Review Board (IRB # 227864-18). If you have any questions regarding your rights as a research subject or any concerns regarding this project, including any dissatisfactions with any aspect of this study, you may report them (confidentially if you so desire) to Human Subjects Research Review Committee to: the PSU Office of Research Integrity, 1600 SW 4th Ave., Market Center Building, Ste. 620, Portland, OR 97201; phone (503) 725-2227 or 1 (877) 480-4400; email hsrrc@pdx.edu.

You may contact the lead investigator of this project, Dr. Erin Shortlidge (eshortlidge@pdx.edu), 503-725-9305 with any questions/concerns.

If you have questions about filling recording the information please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you again.

Good luck in the field,
Leland Brown

I am assuming I received it because I bought an OREGON bear tag, but still doesn't feel right...

A "dot edu" or a "dot gov" would make it more legit.......google Portland State University to see if they even have a Wildlife Biology degree program, probably not with UO and OSU not that far away and more logical to be conducting such studies.

If it’s the same guy, he’s the  Non-lead Hunting Education Coordinator at Oregon Zoo. Which I think is part of the city of Portland. https://www.linkedin.com/in/leland-brown-a17428103/ I looked up the Dr Erin Shortlidge he listed & her background is plants. She got her PhD studying moss. Seems weird to me those two would be studying bullet performance on bears.

"This bullet has excellent performance on cubs, especially fresh out of the womb."
