Oregon Mountain tom
« on: May 04, 2023, 06:35:42 AM »
Got over the mountain about 90 minutes after fly down this morning.  Hiked out to a ridge I’ve had success on numerous times and after trying several different calls, I got a response with the Quaker Boy Mini boat paddle.  I moved over and set up directly above the bird, then gave him some sweet slate yelps…silence.  Pulled out the ole yeller pot and cutt followed by a run of yelps…silence.  Switched back to the mini boat paddle…he thundered!!!  After he gobbled several more times I set the call down and waited to see what he was going to do, and 3-4 minutes go by and I caught some movement in the timber.  He’s slowly walking up the hill with his head high searching for the hen.  When he’s behind some tree’s I shoulder the Winchester.  Then he steps into a lane and…lights out!

Thanks guys! one of those beautiful spring mornings with no wind, sun is out, and the woods are alive.

I might get over to the Blue Mountains for another bird if the snow melts. Depends on whether the salmon fishing gets red hot.

That sounds like an awesome hunt!  It also reminds me how particular they can be to one call vs. another and is a good reminder that I carry all of that stuff, I should maybe use more of it  :chuckle:

:tup:Sweet!  I've been so busy building arrows that I didn't even buy a second turkey tag.
