Favorite game coolers
« on: June 17, 2023, 08:31:11 PM »
Now that the draw results are out and I drew squat I want to talk about a more successful type subject. What is everyone’s favorite elk hunting cooler for camp or bringing one home. Assuming september heat and a long drive. I have a Rtic 145 just for game coming home but want to hear options from you guys. Thanks

Tagging along. I drew a quality tag in Sept and my Costco cooler probably won't hold up for a week in the heat. Also going antelope hunting in WY and need a cooler to hold up for a week while I get the meat home. Looks like Grizzly is $100 cheaper than Yeti for a comparable cooler with a 4 star rating and great reviews.

Chest freezer with a small generator is a good option.
I usually take a big white igloo cooler and a smaller yeti (75)  and I can take a boned out elk with ice.
I keep the big white cooler loaded to the gills with ice, and use the yeti for drinks and food. Once I harvest something I have enough ice for a few days if needed. Buy more ice if we make a trip to town and buy more at the gas station when heading back home.  Keep the drain plugs open and never had a problem. Shade is your friend even for a yeti. A blanket on top helps too. Those grizzly coolers look nice

2 Coleman extreme 120s will keep a boned out cow elk on ice for 7 days in September and all I use.   Sold all my rotomolded heavy ass coolers since the Coleman does everything needed for plenty of days.

I have a rugged road cooler for boat and food use when needed.  Stupid light weight but expensive.

I also have two Coleman extremes, one is perfect for a deer and two for elk obviously.  I freeze 12 milk jugs full of water and bring them all in one ice chest to start.  Great way to bring home meat, doesn't have the meat sitting in water nor cost a $ 100 for ice lol. If I'm staying a week or longer I rotate the milk jugs overnight in the camper freezer. It's been a good system for me. Good luck everyone this year.

I have an old igloo that I bought someplace about 1999.  It's one of the huge white ones and I've been through about a dozen latches and hinges and now have the firehose hinges which seem to last.

It has cracks, stains and doesn't shut quite right most of the time but I'm not making payments on it and it will hold a couple elk quarters and a bunch of ice for many days.   :chuckle:

For $$ value, I can't find a better cooler than the Coleman Extremes.  They just work.  The hinge is a little on the weak side, but I can overlook that for their performance-per-$ vs the high end rotomolded units.

The Fish box coolers are awesome! I won a yeti tundra and we put 2 boned Montana bucks in and had room to spare and I will say they keep ice really well . Would I buy one for the price they go for .. hell no

I have 3 large Coleman coolers and we have a portable meat cooler that we use in camp.
I no longer try to bone out the meat and pack it into coolers. I typically lay the meat bags between the coolers with blocks of ice on top and bottom and use my tables as a top. I’ve had made the 10-16 hour commute every time so far.
