Pigs down

Doing some deer scouting on a large farm with a friend, he has his "assaulting rifle with the scary magazine size" in 7.62, and I have my bow.

Bopping along and my eyes can't even believe what I'm seeing. 30-40 black pigs including about a dozen piglets are pouring out the leaves of a garden patch. They are trying to find the hole they came in and can't.

After about a one count he starts pasting them with all of his rounds, excellent hits (Thanks USMC). When he's finished I take two swings with my bow. One headshot at one staring at me, and one perfect heart shot. Headshot died on the spot and heartshot ran around but died fast.

All in all 4 pigs on the deck and probably a 5th that we spotted from far away. The terrain did not allow for easy dragging so we processed 3. It was extremely hot so we weren't able to fully blood trail them all but a few of them surely died down the road.

Don't ever believe the "wild pig doesn't taste good" rumor, they were delicious. We fed the neighborhood.

Did not expect to see them in this area at all, so it was quite the surprise.

Love wild pig meat. Only killed them in South Carolina but all were delicious

How much did they weigh?

This was in Northern CA.

I'm really bad with weights but I'll give it a wild guess, I do have pigs of my own. I think the two sows could be between 100-120 lbs. I think the boars were about 150-180 lbs give or take.


I honestly tried to drag the biggest boar downhill and could not. Luckily we had a lot of help.

I definitely think one or two of the big boars we saw were way over 200 lbs. but we didn't get them on the deck so I'll never know.

just had a deer hunt on Vandenberg Space Force Base turn into a pig hunt last week not my story to tell but i was in the thick stuff with just a big ole knife looking for it, got quite sketchy, pigs you could not see running through the Manzanita and six foot tall grass, 99 on the pucker factor. 78 yd archery shot straight down off a cliff. These things are no joke especially with a bow. Sorry about the thread jack but pigs are awesome to hunt!

And good of you to harvest what you could.

One of these days I will harvest one of the pigs I kill, but first I have to figure out how I get my nose past the nastiest smell on earth 
I just can't get myself past thinking how something can smell that friggin nasty can taste good.

I don't have any more trips planned down there any time soon, but if you want to predator hunt around here I have a target rich environment for us to try.

As far as them stinking they honestly smelled better than my commercial hogs. Just had more ticks. If you don't pierce the stomach I don't think they smell that bad at all. Take this with a grain of salt as I have my pig pen about 30 yards from where I'm posting this.
