Pend Oreille River Fishing

As the title states going to be staying on the Pend Oreille river in a couple weeks regs state it is statewide lake rules so presume there are trout, but are there anything else worth fishing for? Staying about 10 miles from Newport, this is my first scouting trip for my Moose hunt but figured I would throw some trout gear in since we will be right on the river. How is the fishing in this river?

I think there are still some Northern Pike as well. The Tribe has been doing their best to remove them.

I haven't fished there too much but have had luck catching bass when casting towards shore with spinners (I'm sure there are better rigs, I was just going w what I had for trout).  Resist the urge to have too big of a feast... especially big pike:

Definitely kill pike if you catch them though, even if you leave them on the shore to rot.

Lead head jig with a soft plastic curly tail works great for smallmouth.  Spinners and spoons work pretty well also.

We’ve been making that a yearly trip to either Metaline or Ione to camp and fish the Pend Oreille river. It’s nowhere close to where you’ll be but the sections we’ve fished were almost all smallmouth and a few largemouth. The section between Box canyon dam and Boundary dam I’m convinced is all smallmouth. Above Box Canyon dam is where we got the occasional largemouth. The Indians has been making a great effort to get the pike out of there so that’s gotten to be a rarity. We have used a vast array of lures (rooster tails, plastic swim baits, crank bait, spinner baits, jigs of all shapes and sizes) and they all work but when it got fussy the tube jig in pumpkin seed color worked excellent. Smallmouth are super fun to catch, they’re very aggressive and make you think you’ve got something huge on the end of your line, they fight like hell.

They will eat just about anything. We like rapalas and top water stuff. Bait works well also.

Throw a ned rig around rocks, rip-rap, any type of underwater structure and you will catch smallmouth if they are there.  I like a 1/4oz jig head with a split tail Stick-o.  I also use ones without the split tail but I swear the split tail works better.  Its a cheap set-up that I started using for my kids because they like to get stuck, but after we started catching a bunch of smallies with it, we don't use many other rigs now haha.
