Marlin model 55
« on: April 19, 2024, 04:03:10 PM »
Couldn't help myself and made a bid or two for one of these goose guns on gun broker. I'm curious how it shoots with that big ol 36" barrel... sure don't see these guns these days, I've never seen one in person... I don't think they like steel shot, but I've always wanted to pattern one of these guys. Wondering who has shot one, who still has one, any good stories or memorable long range shots? They kinda seem like there's a mystique about these super long barreled bolt actions...

My dad has owned one since the 70, he used to bring it along duck hunting as a backup or loaner. It has seen its share of steel #2s but probably wasn’t designed for it. I’ve fired it a fair bit, getting a double trying to work that clunky bolt is a real challenge  :chuckle:

I’ve always wanted one of the 10 gauge models, the 5510 “super goose”, for no other reason than it just being a ridiculous weapon.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

They look like fun, like old ww2 movie "mad minute" kinda fun with the Brit's go nuts with their enfields, I got a lead on the 10 gauge which I really want but I won't pay 7-800$ for one

I still have mine.  Got it new around 1982, $195.00, that was a lot of money then. Grampa gave it to me as a Christmas present.   Don't shoot it as much nowdays, used to take it and my 870 in the boat.  Still have and will keep it.  Fun to have, just hard to get second and third shot off fast

I have one i bought kind of on a lark when i was in college.  Never used it.  Cool gun, like swinging a chunk of sewer pipe. I had big plans of patterning it and getting some longer range handloads worked up.  Some day...

I bought one probably 15 years ago at the Puyallup gun show.
It's just a neat old shotgun. About forty years ago a friend used on loaded with Buckshot for deer hunting back East.
