Brittany to do’s and not to do’s
Hawkeye63:
I have a new Brittany pup and looking for input from those who have had them. I have had Gsp, and labs but first Brittany. Wondering if there are any things you need to do and more importantly what not to do with a Brittany. He’s very sweet and seems super intelligent so far. Thanks

I've only had two Brits, among labs and others, so I'm sure others can offer more expert advice. One obvious thing is they are very 'soft-natured' dogs. I was always very careful to be extra gentle and nurturing with them. A firm glance and a soft "no" was usually enough to make them feel guilty for any misdeeds.
Mine were both great natural hunters. The only thing we really had to work on was not crowding points. Great dogs; have fun!

I am on my second Brit. The one thing I have found out and read about is the they are extremely sensitive! You need to be real careful about punishment. All your really have to do is just raise your voice and you get the point across. If you have to punish use a rolled up paper and just use a very light spanking. Loving and encouragement are the best. Like it is said you get more with honey than vinegar. They are a loving and very attached type of dog, they will do almost anything to please you. They also need lots of attention and play time. They do get bored and will start to look for things to do, and that gets them into trouble.

Make sure the dog spends all of your free time with you. Chores, shopping, play time. My dog even sleeps at the end of my bed. That tight bond will allow the training to come more smoothly as the dog will forever try to please. It already knows how to hunt

Great info so far
I'd like to 3rd the portion about them being a sensitive dog breed. a soft hand is absolutely required with him at all times. If you ever start to feel frustrated take a time out and put your dog away.
They are great loyal dogs that enjoy nothing more than being with you at all times.
Good luck with your new best friend and congratulations.
