Dan-o:
Congrats on the draw for your son!!!!
I'm no help with your timing question, but I'm sure with 2 weeks you guys will get it done and have a blast.
Hopefully someone in the know can chime in.

My dad had the early bull tag in 49 last year and we hunted the first week of October. Never saw a cow, saw two bulls in that time. He got the second. Nothing was responsive to calling and it seemed like the rut wasn't on quite yet. Moose were very active at night. It was hot during the day.
I have heard from others that later in the month is better. I went deer hunting for the second weekend of modern rifle (different unit) and saw 7 moose in a swamp, bulls fighting, chasing and breeding cows.

For a cow tag I would skip the first two weeks minimum and then base the hunt on temperatures if you have some flexibility. I hunted with my brother in 2020 (bull tag) and while we did have action on rutting bulls, the cows kept to the thick stuff. Weather was clear, hot, and dry. Daytime activity was extremely limited. We hunted 10 days, did not end up with a moose and bailed for a week and a half. It cooled off, leaves began to fall and a trace of snow came in. Moose were everywhere. We saw more cows in one morning packing out the bull than the first trip total. Moose are big and slow to breakdown and process. Make life easy and skip the opener. I would combine the hunt with deer season and hunt October 20-November 4 or so.
