Ilwaco North Jetty question
« on: April 09, 2025, 10:51:30 AM »
I'm wondering the legality of fishing a snare for crab while casting for Black Rockfish/Ling Cod.  Technically it would be "fishing" two rods, but one rod won't catch any fish, as it's got a crab snare.

I just don't want to have to go to court on a ticket for something like that.

Curious as to what you folks' opinion is on this.

I would say go for it.  Pretty sure you can have more than one rod throwing crab traps as they count as "pots".  The rod your using for fishing would be separate.  Just my two cents on this as I will not be coming to court with you as a witness. :chuckle:

If you're worried then e-mail fish and game, save the response. I personally would go for it without hesitation

The crab rod isn’t fishing.  You could have two crab rods and fish a third.

As said , Yes you can. I asked an WDFW enforcement officer last Coho season the same question. He said yep good to go it counts as a unit of crab gear not a second rod.

Thanks, and all of you are correct.
There was a game warden there today when we were heading out, and said we were good to go.

I hadn't fished the Jetty since I did with my Grampa way before the Mtn blew.  We had fun, and learned a lot.  Didn't quite limit out fishing; 4 shy of our Rockfish limit, and ended up one shy for our Lingcod.  I actually had our last lingcod, and it was a nice one, but the line broke when I tried to hoist him up.  (No way to get down with a net).  I can definitely see how folks get hurt out there though!  Didn't catch a single crab, but didn't put much effort into it either.  Game warden said there was quite a few crab caught.

Thanks to all who replied!

I have lost SOOOOO much gear fishing around the Jetties, both from a boat and from shore. Not down there but up by Westport.
Glad you got your answer and had success fishing!
