Trappers report of catch
« on: April 11, 2025, 08:55:04 AM »
Just a little reminder that your report of catch is due on the 20th. it is super easy now. You can do it all on the harvest report section of WDFWs website https://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/requirements/harvest-reporting
I did it the other day and it was a snap. i know some would like to keep a copy and they have you covered. They sent me back an email with a copies of my reports that I could save or print.
I have to say it is easier than it has ever been.

I am glad to hear that perhaps WDFW is remembering who they work for and making the system more user friendly.
Remember trappers, the burden of proof that a harvest report was turned in is on the trapper. We had a trapper contacted by WDFW “police” last summer accusing him of not turning in a harvest report the spring before. They called back later and said they had “found” it.
Always keep a copy of your report. I realize the computer sounds pretty fail safe. I don’t use a computer. I send my hard copy report in Return Receipt. And keep receipts and copy and picture of report.
Also, I have turned in reports in the past showing a harvest of a species in a county. A couple years later when they post their data it has showed zero of that species harvested in that county. Data in, crap out. Your copy proves we harvested that species and that that harvest is sustainable year after year.

If anyone does decide to mail in their report, I would encourage them to send it via certified return receipt mail. That way you have proof you sent it in. I would bet on a high chance of it getting lost within the Department.

Right. It does cost $8-$9 dollars, I look at it as CYA insurance.

I highly recommend you keep your records on every year catch record whether it’s screen shots , email sent saved but you’ve got to keep some sort of documentation! It saved me from possibly getting a citation as I forwarded my catch report back to them that was sent and within 10 minutes they responded back that they “ found “ my original report

WCO is separate and not online, is that correct?  WCO report is for trapping that did not use Special Permits only, I believe.

May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

The paper copy allows for fur trapping, or WCO trapping to be entered on the same paper.

The online version for my recreational trapping was straight forward.
I waited till April to complete my WCO report. The new system doesn't allow you to purchase the survey (for free) to complete online.

Kyla sent a PDF version for my WCO report.
It's always interesting.

This year I sent my report in differently. Monday I went to an office store and faxed my paper copy of trappers report of catch to WDFW fax number.
Since the onness is on the trappers to prove WDFW received their report I opened my email to ask WDFW for a confirmation if they had received it.
Lo and behold I have 6 emails from WDFW confirming they received my report. Every entry on my part received a response.
Kudos to WDFW. The only problem I see is for beaver they say the trapping was not in response to a complaint. Well, it was a complaint but on their paper report form it doesn’t ask if the take was on a complaint or not.
Cost: Fax $2.38 versus $8-$9 return receipt. And I’ve never gotten a confirmation off a return receipt.

I got a prompt email response from Kyla. So, with the online Snafu the department made it work.

I probably just purchase my "free" survey with my trapping license.

And again, Trappers, save a copy, and get confirmation that WDFW received your report.
