I bought this primarily because I needed almost everything for a Model 90 project I’m working on and it has a Lyman tang sight that looked salvageable.  After getting it, and stripping it, and looking at what I had…. Let’s just say, it’s been said that it’s not safe for me to have my files within reach and a gun in my hands.

It’s a cute little Winchester 06.  I might just line the barrel and use it, or I might go looking for a good 06 barrel.  This little fellow needs every aspect of restoration, so if you are thinking of maybe tackling something like that, or just parts of a complete restoration, it may be of interest.

As always, feel free to comment or ask questions or ask me to go into more detail.

Pretty cool project. Can a barrel be re-rifled?

If/when 25 Stevens ammo was available, that was an option for single shots and repeaters that the magazine would work with.

Rimfire and cast bullet CF, Redman or TJ’s barrel liners are no problem.  Back in the day Diller and Parker Hale (Parkerrifled liners) were very popular.  They are much heavier and used with jacketed bullets in high intensity varmint rifles.  I read in old publications that there is everything to gain and nothing to loose by lining a barrel over using a new barrel.

I have a LR liner here, maybe today or tomorrow I’ll go ahead and put it in this barrel.  I’ll document how I do that.

I’ll try and get a good photo of one of my vintage Stevens 44 1/2 rifles that has a heavy liner.  That can still be done on a heavy barrel, but you would need to turn a blank down and then probably have to make up a custom piloted liner drill to install it.  Or, I suppose if you turned it to a size that Jesse has a drill for, you could send it down to Oregon and have him drill it.

That one spot of blister rust on the rt side was pretty nasty, it cleaned up OK.  There are scads of more photos on the RFC link.

Thank you.  I actually made it over to shoot a few chucks last week, have been meaning to call.   Got my RV back in central WA, but have been stuck here.  Been messing with this 06 to keep myself entertained.
