Idaho or Colorado application for next year? Both?
« on: December 06, 2025, 09:39:22 PM »
Hello, with idaho application open i am trying to decide which to go with. Obviously idaho is much closer of a drive, but also i have to buy 260$ license to even apply for a draw. Colorado on the other hand i believe you apply (with some fees of course) and pay full license and tag fee only if you draw. And you get points in colorado if you dont draw, idaho doesnt seem to have points?
Couple things about me:
- I hunt alone
- new elk hunter, got my first elk this year, west WA
- Planning to get a bow but only hunted rifle before
- Still planning to hunt WA rifle, just looking for more places to hunt elk for sake of experience.
- Absolutely in no way am i picky about size of the antlers. If its legal, i'm happy with it.

Thanks for any help.

Idaho is now and you'll know in a few weeks. If you don't draw Idaho then try for Colorado in a few months. $200 is not much in the grand sceam of either one of those trips. Tops you'll be out $320 if you don't draw either.

I mean ummm you should save your money and stay home. Yeah that's what you should do because I'm definitely not applying for either.🫣

Idaho has twice as many elk as Washington.
Colorado has twice the elk as Idaho.

Roll the dice on both, if you draw Idaho you could sit out CO.  The trends across the west is that tags are getting harder and harder to draw.  If you are serious about hunting you should be trying to draw as many as you can imo.
