Where I am now in Idaho, mule deer is general spike or two point. Limited draw for three point or better. From I’ve seen so far I would say mule deer density here is less than Okanogan county, and about the same as Chelan county. So not good. |

I’m still having a hard time understanding this based on the 2pts people post, they’re just young deer… yes you do occasionally see a brute of a mature one but that’s generally not the case. I’ve hunted all over the place and plenty of 3 and 4pts and typically young 2pts, and a few nice frame 2x that are just young when you get to looking at them. |

You can’t put a smooth beam two point on the ground anymore to show you naysayers it’s teeth. |

I made a thread years ago asking for pictures of these big giant two points. I remember one from Washington and another from a non APR state. Rest were younger bucks. Every 6 point bull you can't shoot in a spike unit is a 400" and every decent sized two point is a giant that you've been screwed out of killing as a 3 or 4. |

Genetics ...... They really need to reduce or do away with antler less harvests. Save antlerless harvest for youth , disability, property damage or none at all if possible. I say that ,a lot of guys get concerned about genetics. I'll explain here..... Big buck gene pool.... Every deer that a big buck sires has his gene. That includes doe. Let's say big buck gets shot , during modern. ... didn't breed. Let's say three point with his gene harvested. Two point left to rot....harvested Now some doe permits kick in , few of those gone with his gene. See where I'm going, what's the chance that his gene pool survived this one season. NOT GOOD. So how many big buck gene have we killed off,by handing out doe permits like candy over the years. A lot folks don't realize, save a doe ,your not only saving a breeder, might be saving a lost gene pool . You can run this kind of simulator in your head with blue tongue, CWD,winter kill, fall harvest, ect. Jurassic park stuff ,That's the question I always ask myself. Is this gene pool gone due to this. Our doe harvest or die off or poaching, effects the gene pool a lot. I'll turn the page here.... There was a group of doe in my hunting area I spotted, pretty much daily. Two spikes with them ,they play, fight with each other. Watched them grow ,all summer ,always with these group of doe. Most likely old moma doe. Went up after the first week of modern, one spike was gone. Ya sure a four leg predator might of got him, I watched them all summer. The fact he went missing after modern opened, tells me ,most likely....high probably he got shot. I have no facts .... Just what I see from year to year. But I do see that gene pool getting smaller, peeps don't realize the damage they can do to a small gene pool. Especially in small herds like we have. This happened in mule deer country,2025 season. |
