Big Game Hunting > Elk Hunting
Not fact checked, but I can relate.

Fiction or not..
It's a crossroads most of us travel if you've been hunting long enough...
I much prefer the adventure over the harvest anymore....
It definitely resonates.

I would argue that he could have done all the observations and archiving and still killed his elk. In fact, I believe being a hunter, trapper, fisherman forces you to be more observant and thus a better source of information about your quarry. Truth is these observations are more usually dismissed as "anecdotal".
Looks like a subtle critic of hunting to steer people away from an interest in hunting.
Kingofthemountain83:
I've been doing that the last few years hunting with my dad sometimes...

I agree, Fishgamereaper... It's something that some of us slowly realize over time. Not all, mind you, and that is perfectly fine! I cherish my priceless hunting memories, and fully support those that carry on the tradition. I simply came to a point, (quite unaware of the fact at the time) a few years ago where the experience of being, seeing, and in the moment far outweighed the need to harvest an animal. That's just me- Ive harvested enough animals; I enjoy observing now... It doesn't mean Im a subtle critic steering others away from hunting... Far from it!  Best of luck to to those filling their freezers!

I am feeling that way these days as well - I would still drop the hammer for that one big buck that strikes me as special or any decent bull elk as antlered elk have forever eluded me.... but I get more joy these days watching the excitement in my wife or daughters' eyes when they are successful!

edit - the above only applies to big game - I will still happily pop any predator  or the damn ground squirrels that keep tearing up the mountain behind the house!  :chuckle:
