I was up at Shriner Peak in Mt. Rainier one night for a quick backpack trip and they were screaming in the valley below us at Shriner Lake. I know it's not huntable but there were about 4 bulls down there it sounded just going nuts!

Nice bull Spin!  I didn't realize the Packwood area had bulls of that caliber.  Pretty decent in my book.

Believe it or not but the estrus cycle is determined by "LIGHT". Biologist or Scientist whoever have kept deer in a light controlled environment and staved of estrus by controlling the light. So the rut is actually affected by the amount of light.

I am sure there is solid science behind that (I have heard it several times from reputable sources), but I will tell you this; it's 90 degrees in the Blues right now, and I can't buy an answer to a bugle.  They are usually going NUTS right now (2nd week of the bow season).  Not saying they're not rutting, just not screaming.

just got back , had a bull bugling this morning. had to sound like a spike to keep him going though,tried cow calls and he would shut up and move away, throw out a weak bugle and he would bugle back. finally saw him about 8am cutting through a cut with one cow and it wasnt a small bull. im confused on what the elk are waiting for? saw about a 240-260 bull on sunday and called to him and he just ran away,he was atleast 250yds away.

Been up in the Coweman since the opener and haven't hardly heard a bugle the past 5 days. We had a small 5x5 ripping last fri and thought they would be going strong after that. Haven't been able to get anything going though, hopefully something will happen between now and the close on sunday. Have seen a lot of elk though and been a great hunt, even had my 5 year old son out for the morning on Sunday for his first hunt. That made my week and being able to stick something will be icing on the cake.

Maybe just like last year in the coweeman? They were srceaming and talking nonstop right up til bow opened. Shut up for three weeks and then started again. The only ones we had going during bow last year were the big hogs that wouldn't come in close enough for a shot!

The guys going into the tree farm on quads and bugling off them doesn't help either.  I should have been out at first light but came to town last night and decided to stay and take the kids to school, will be back in camp by 10 and out to the woods. Will say that I have been seeing a lot of elk mid day so hopefully todays delay isn't to much of a hinderance.

Pressure can make them stop being so vocal.  And like someone said if it's hot or theres a full moon they'll only talk the first and last hours of daylight. 

Guys can sound like crap and it wont bother the elk.  It's when you have guys driving around on four wheelers and bugling at noon that bothers the elk and makes them shut up. 

Also remember as long as they're not being bumbed in their beds they'll stick around because they feel safe.  But if  you bump them in their beds they'll leave the area because they don't feel safe anymore.

they were screamin yesterday for me. early am till about 7 then nothing until about three. didnt get a shot but i did smash a little slick head and my buddy got his first deer ever, it was a lil spike. so the day wasnt a loss at all. good eatin. freezer is full of deer and bear meat now.

Spent the week in the Winston unit.  The elk were very quite.  They bulls were talking the first 1/2 hour of day light and about 45 mins prior to dark.  Then quite the rest of the day.  If you got on top of them and talked you could draw a response, but not like you would think.  Saw animals everyday, but just couldn't connect as they were in the bottoms and in the thickets.  Tough shots for the bow.

got my first bugle last night since last saturday. and he bugled at me after he picked up his cows and went a bout 3 ridges over. real slow. not much pressure where ive been going either. not sure whats goin on.

Talked to my buddy this morning out on the coast. Same thing out there ...pretty quite although he did miss a little 4 point last night.

just talked to a friend and said he had 5 bulls screamin their heads off tonight right below him...

I had bulls bugling like crazy in the evening last week here in ID and a buddy who is hunting here archery says they're going crazy as well...  People need to realize what kind of bugles the bulls are doing and how to respond, probably why 90% of the bulls shutup after they've been bugled at by hunters when it does happen...

If you throw out a locator bugle and one throws one back.  Most people bugle back.  That is the last thing you want to do.  You need to move in on him and cow call. Plus almost all the human bugles I hear are the challenging agressive bugles.  That's why they pick up and move away. If he has a bunch of cows why would he want to stay and fight and then possibly lose some cows. 

Also if you bugle then you are a bugle that the bulls in the area have not heard before.  They have not seen you.  So they will come in silent so they can get a look at you to size you up.  Until people learn what each call actually means in elk language you are just wasting your time. 

I highly recommend that during the off-season everyone buys all of ELKNUT's CD's or DVD's and watches/listens to them religiously.  This will up your game tremendously.
