Sturgeon
« on: October 03, 2009, 09:05:05 AM »
Man oh man what a day yesterday!!  I took my 16 year old down to the Columbia River and launched out of North Bonneville for sturgeon.  The boat record for this guide was 42 in a day.  We had an hour where we didn't catch anyting and still ended up with 40, one keeper and then the last fish of the day I caught a 7 footer.  I can barely lift my arms today.   :chuckle:  My son caught 18 and I caught 22.  A couple of others were within an 1/8th of an inch for the keepers.  We were averaging a fish every 10 minutes and three times we had doubles on.  What a day for my son!  I'll post photos in a couple of days when I get them back.

How do you all fix your sturgeon.  Thanks for any ideas.

Machias, cut some steaks off the fish, place in a glass covered container for the microwave. A dab of butter in the dish, some Old Bay seasoning if you have, or some garlic/herb spice (not too heavy), a splash of wine, microwave and keep an eye on it. Might have to turn the fish once to get it done.  Fish is done when white, not translucent, starts to flake apart... Serve with rice, or noodles, or break it up on a toasted garlic roll as a sandwich.

Awesome eating fish. Let me know...  :EAT:

Sounded like a great day.  Same as us a week ago- tore them up.  Was going to Today but couldn't get anyone to go last week, when I did hear back all the bait shops were closed up here that I know and by 4:00 figured it wasn't happening so I went with plan B, kids hockey, like I don't get enough of that all season till March.  Oh well next time...   First weekend for keepers too :bash:   Did you guys end up with any keepers?  I got to buy a place down there, love that area just hate the drive from Seattle...

Cut into slices 1" thick, melt butter and garlic together, put on barbeque low heat keep basting them and turning them till down.  yummy, yummy.

We fished above and below Beacon Rock.  We launched from the boat launch between North Bonneville WA and the Bridge of the Gods Toll Bridge.  There were LOTS of boats out all up and down the river.  Looked like they were all catching fish.

Thanks for the work Jackelope.  :)

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I caught one keeper and two others within an 1/8 of an inch.  I left home and left the dam camera on the table, so I had to buy a disposable camera and my guide took several photos on his digital, however he doesn't get back untill the 12th.  I dropped the camera off a Wal-Mart today so I'm hoping to have them back in a few days.

Reason why they are my favorite here...  We also had a couple banger days like that but with three people on two rods, one was set out with an 18" shad for oversized all day...

Machais has the water risen yet?  Was the water atleast to the back of the ramp?

No, the entire ramp was still just out of water.
