I overpack, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!
Preperation for the hunting, fishing trip is part of the fun...reloading, tying flies etc are all an extension of this and help the time go by when you can't actually be out in the woods or on the water.
As a Search and Rescue Coordinator I wish everyone would overpack. You would be amazed at how many people don't even take what I would consider the minimum out in the woods (usually hikers, birdwatchers etc not usually hunters).
Bare minimum (light source, noise generator (whistle etc), water, proper clothing and if it works a cell phone with extra battery).
Last two day hikers we have had to go find, were wearing cotton jackets with cotton pants and tank tops under the jacket, no lights, minimal water, no food. They left there vehicle at 1430 hours for a 3 mile hike and of course got stuck in the timber after dark. This was in November on the wet side, raining of course.
Last year it was water rescues, one guy in a canoe on the skagit, shorts, T-shirt in a wooden canoe with a inflatible life vest and a boonie hat. Second pair was in feb, snow gear from wal-mart and a 2 man inflatible raft from big 5 for a eagle float trip down the skagit. Needless to say neither boat made it past the first rapid with big rocks. Every year I shake my head on these SAR's and when I go out in the woods I always make sure I take enough out that if something happens the SAR group that has to come find me are not thinking the same things I do.

Shootmore...I hear you...as former Snoco SAR it CONSTANTLY amazes me what STUPID things folks will do..some even make the news.
Won't be me...I'm in the overpacked to the max crew. I'm usu good for 2X the anticipated time gone...and even after that I likely won't be hungry/thirsty/cold. Inventoried the larder after the last deer camp....could have stayed up another week EASY without eating the same thing twice! Had water for another week...without resorting to the filter-pump and containers for 2+ weeks water (less if I took a sponge bath). I can and have done the backpacking trip, pack was heavier than it NEEDED to be..but not so heavy as to preclude getting back out with game. Would have taken more than one trip then. But i can get a LOT of gear on the freighter frame, ESP if I pack it up off the ground...like on a stump/log.
Of course if someone NEEDS something..I have it somewhere.
Too many camps get interupted by the sherrif/ranger/gamey asking for help FINDING someone who was less prepared.
