interesting find while cleaning my 30-30
« on: November 01, 2009, 06:43:22 PM »
After a disaster at the range yesterday (scope broke, left, replaced it and went back to rezero new scope), I got home and comensed to the noraml cleaning.

I recently purchased this from a friend whom got it in trade for some work he did for his uncle.  It is a Marlin 336 and was made it '79.  Its seen some abuse and you could tell it has seen its fair share of hunting.  When I got it is had some light rusting on it and the bore appeared to be in "decent" condition with some very minor pitting towards the muzzle end.

Well yesterday I decided to give it the cleaning of a lifetime.  Broke out the bore cleaner and the G96 and started working it over.  Patch after patch and bore brush after reapeted bore brush.  I finally got it to the point where it was passing a very light grey on the patch.  Then I started running the dry patches through it and rinse and repeat the entire process.

Towards wrapping it up I started noticing very small flakes of chrome on the patches.  And when I finished I took my sure fire 2Ed and hit it with 120lumens down the barrel (closest thing to a "bore scope" I have.  And noticed another large (roughly "1/8") flake at the chamber.

To me it says the rifling is on its way to checking out or the new Hornaday lever evolution ammo is just to much for this rifle.

What say the hive mind of the hunting forums?  The rifle still shoots very well.  After getting the new optic on it it is shooting 2MOA at 100 and it would have been 1 MOA except for about every 3rd round I would get a flyer.

Time for a new barrel?  Possible sources of chrome?  Any ideas?

Doing a google search I could not find any evidence that marlin used chrome lined barrels. I of course could be wrong. Their new models do not list this.

Is it possible it could be lead?

Numrichs lists barrels for $47. I do not know if they are the same.

Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

Have toured Marlin facility and best of my knowledge do not use chrome to line barrels. Only company I know uses chrome lined barrels is Colt on Ar 15's and some other companys make Ar 15 variants. Agree with Mookie. Most likely lead. Think gun is fine. 2 moa on a lever action 336 is pretty darn good.

I'd bet it is lead fouling. Keep cleaning.

I agree, it's probably lead and/or copper fouling finally breaking loose.  Are you removing the bolt and lever and cleaning from the chamber forward?
Have you tried to melt the flakes that came off?  Lead will probably have a pretty specific and relatively low melting point that is detailed in some chemistry book somewhere... :dunno:

Send us some pics.

Thanks for the input guys.  I am so used to the "black rifles" I had "assumed" that most rifles chrome plated there stuff.  But the flakes looked very "chromish".  I will hit the rifle again tommorow and see if I can get anything out of it.

As far as checking melting point, what would be the safest way to do so without trying to melt it on the stove in which would get me summarily executed by the "household six".

If it is lead fouling than this rifle hadnt been really cleaned in god knows how long.  Me being a former Marine I get anal retentive about how spotless my firearms are and if there is a chance of more fouling being in there I will hit this rifle like the fist of an angry god with the cleaning to knock anythng and everything out of it.

Oh, and yes, I remove the bolt and lever at each cleaning.

I once had a cheep cleaning kit and the rod was rubbing the barrel causing cromelike flakes. It had me stumped for a bit but then I got to looking at the rod as it slid in the barrel and watched the flakes come off. Might be your problem too.
