Rattled in two bucks today
« on: November 04, 2009, 10:54:43 PM »
I stopped by an area I've always wanted to hunt today and thought I'd see if I could rattle in a buck.  Within 3 minutes i had a forky at 10 yards, followed by a doe on a fast trot bleating loudly, who had another forky in tow.  Nothing too exciting but pretty cool to pull off the road, walk 50 yards and call in three deer into slam dunk bow range.   I got a bit of video but it's poor quality stuff.  If I knew how to get it on YouTube, I'd post it  :dunno:

The first buck was all over me instantly.  Then I heard the doe bleating and bam, she's in my lap.  I've got a rattle bag in one hand, a vid-cam in the other, not really trying to hide.  They just stood there confused as all get out.  When I stood up to leave, then seemed a bit put out.  Good fun, wish my daughters were with me though.  I'm going to take them out this weekend and give it a go in some other spots I need to scout for next year.

Awesome.

You say you used a 'rattle bag?'  So you don't use normal antlers and bash them together?  Does the rattle bag simulate fast and aggressive mashing, or slow ticking of antler tines?

i believe with the rattle bag depending on how fast you rub your hands against it determines the sound it makes. Never have used one but sounds like they work!
Ruger brought back the .220, i just shoot it.

If you have a firewire port on your puter and a firewire cable, putting vids on youtube is pretty simple. That would be cool to see. I might have to try to rattle a little this weekend and see what happens. Hopefully you can figure out the youtube vid.

Bow, was they WT, BT or Mulley?

I have never tried rattling, but killed my elk on opening morning of archery season, and now am excited to try and fill my deer tag this late archery season.

Used a Primos rattle bag because I had a camera in the other hand.  I can just mash it into my leg and smack it around with one hand.  I prefer real antlers on dry calm days but note that in damp climates like ours, you can't really get the volume needed out of real antlers.  They are bone and will absorb moisture, making them less "crisp" and loud.  They sound more realistic but the sound doesn't carry as far.  On gusty rainy days, you need to reach out a bit.  Just something to think about.  I don't think rattle bags sound all that real, but they do work and are very easy to carry.

Should have mentioned that - blacktails, lowland deer near Puget Sound.  Dinker forkies but still fun to get them coming in.  I'm hoping to work up some bigger deer this weekend.

Thanks, I bought the Primos yesterday and was thinking about taking it back because it sounded a little to high pitch. I guess I will hold on to it for late muzzle and see what happens.

Feel free to remove some of the plastic and add hardwood dowels, etc.  Make it sound the way you want.  It's not rocket science.  Heck you could even just bag up a bunch of cut-off antler tines and make a rattle bag.  The Primos bag is nice and loud but you can change the sound by playing with the different plastic rods, etc.  Keep it.  It works.
