Single Reed or Double Reed?

Finally gonna start throwing down some duck calls in the near future!

Wanted to ask you guys,

Do you prefer a louder, clearer, single reed, that still can cackle but not like the double?

or,

Do you prefer a raspier, brassier double reed that still can hail but not like the single?

(In a mallard call...)

I like a single reed.  I’m not a very good caller and I find the single easier to use and more forgiving.

I blow a double and always have. In fact thats all i can blow anymore. I just sound liek crap with a single reed now. My little bro has both and switches when the situation calls for it.

single reed wood faulks... its the way to go. they sound great and they are only $15 max

Well like my brother said I use a single and a double, and will blow then in different situations. I feel like the question your asking is almost impossible to answer considering a double reed is great for getting down and dirty with ducks and for little ponds ect...and a single reed is awesome for open water getting loud when needed and calling on windy days. Its just up to you if you want to make 2 different calls. I would say go with a double if you can keep the reeds from sticking.....but if you want to sell to everyone make 2    good luck and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Yeah, I'll make both if I can. It's a pretty big initial investment in reeds, because I have to buy alot of them at a time. I'll get both. Might even make them interchangable in the same bodies... we'll see.

i personly cant stand double reeds you can not chuckle at all with them with any volume and their greeting calls are not as good. go with a single and learn how to blow a real duck call. i have a rnt short barrell and love it. you can blow it loud enough to get their attention if you have to but it is really good on the lower end. a bit pricy but worth it.

I'm gonna monkey with sound chambers, backpressure, etc. to produce some good sound.

If you have some specific design preferences, let me know, I'll try 'em out!

Gonna be some awesome looking stuff with real consistent sound. These boards are brand new, just came out. I think they're gonna be excellent.

single for me always like the sound and don't seem to freeze up like i have had doubbles do a lot

Double & Triple.  I like the raspy.  I do have a nice single reed on my lanyard, but I use it for feed calls primarily.  I like the sounds I get better with the double reeds and I like watching the ducks cock there heads to look to see who's talking.  Then drop in.  Personal preference though.  I have about 12 single reeds and well over 50 doubles.

 Personnaly I prefer single for rivers with the double closeby and the double for small water stuff. The doubles' reed's can tend to get sticky/freeze. Blow backward's sometime's thru it to clear spit and ?. Most time's I don't even use my call because if I've did my homework and setup right I'm where they want to be to begin with. I was humbled on a river one time when my cousin BLASTED on his single reed and the bird's locked up and bee-lined for us. High flyer's all. Ironically one of my most memorable day's duck hunting, I blew my goose call (I had forgotten my duck call) and the duck's just locked up and weren't to be denied. 7 Mallard drakes/7 shot's/9 minute's!

I'm looking forward to this, back to my roots, really. I cut my hunting teeth wingshooting. It's all I did for many many seasons of my youth. Building these calls is gonna be fun!

Find a call the suites you.  Go and try multiple calls, you can record yourself on your phone if you want and see how it sounds.  The true test is in the fields to see how well you can work the birds.  I am scouting birds everyday and I am bouncing from private spots to public spots, essentially going to the birds.  Calling, setting decoy spreads and dog handling are what make it enjoyable.  A whistle is always a good one as well, especially as the birds become more decoys and call shy.  Good luck.

I just got the primos yo sista single read.  I'm not a very good caller but it sounds pretty good to me.  has anyone used this call before
