Bison O.B.A.P.
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:45:37 AM »
Got this in yesterday.  Sucker whooped my butt.  Got it at 2 pm and didn't get finished fleshing and salting it 1 am.   Woke up this morning and can barely move. :P

OK, I am ready for Bison #2. :chuckle:

Put a 5 gallon bucket in the picture for a size comparison.  Not exactly sure what the weight of the skull alone was but I am thinking 45lbs maybe.  The hide itself is at least 100lbs after it was fleshed.   Got a 5 gallon bucket of scrap off the hide.  It was a fairly clean skinned buffalo.

Very cool, keep us updated on the progress please.

Kind of makes a person think how much work the Indian women did back in the day when they did buffalo hunts.

WOW Michelle that's crazy... You must have good endurance working like that. Are you making a rug or are you doing a life size ? What ever it is you have your work cut out for you. Could you imagine Indian squaws had to chew on the hide to break it down so they could use it for garments. I bet that had to be tasty and hard especially when a lot of them didn't have that many teeth  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

It's going to be be a Shoulder Mount and tan the back 1/2.

I had BLKBEARKLR over to help me load it in the truck when I went to pick it up and unload it when I got it to the shop.

I should have had a couple pic's taken when I was rolling it around on the floor trying to cape it off the skull.  :chuckle:

He isn't doing the skull.  Just the shoulder and the back 1/2.  It will be close to 2k.  I am not sure how onld this bull was but I do not think it was as big as @RCHERS that I did earlier this year.  Still a workout trying to get it caped and fleshed.  My legs, back of arms, and back are still sore.

The shoulder mount is $1250.  The back half is $16 per sq ft.  It will probably go around 30 - 40sq ft $480 - $640.

Pretty cool deal there, Michelle.  I'm sure he'll be pleased!  That looks like a lot of work no matter how you approach it.

Somebody told me that is why women feel the need to talk so much. We let them out of the caves and don't make them chew leather anymore. From all the thousands of years of chewing leather they still need to move their mouth allot and discovered they can talk. The rest was history.  ;) just poking fun please nobody take it personal :chuckle:

Looks like that big fellow is going to be a big project. Good luck and don't let it kick yer ass.
Did you save the scraps and make a few buffalo burgers?

I only got about 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of scrap meat and membrane off the hide after fleshing and turning.  It was a pretty clean skinned hide.

I sometimes get a full 5 gallon bucket of scraps of meat and fat off of large bears.

Doubt this buffalo will kick my ass to bad.  Once it is tanned, shaved down and groomed it should be a few pounds lighter and easier to handle.

Finnsihed the Bison out last week.  Was waiting for the rain to quit so I could take pictures.   I know that it took the 2nd largest form made.
