Not happy with your spring bear permit? Read this.
« on: April 09, 2010, 04:01:23 PM »
So I called F&W today (360-902-2515) and let them know that I was not happy with a few things on my spring bear permit.

1. Packets are very late.
2. WeyCo shutting Lincoln hunters out a couple days a week.
3. Hound hunting in the unit while the spring permit season is in session.

I was told that I could send my permit back to the 600 Capitol Way address, postmarked before the 15th, and I could have my points re-instated.

When asked if he had heard much of the same, he said yes. Lots of people are not happy. He stated that the F&W is providing "opportunity" but that they are still bound by the rules of the landowner. He also said we should be getting a letter soon with an email address to online education tools.

Even though I am unhappy, I will keep my permit, as I have spent too much time scouting (heading out as soon as I post this) and did have a good opportunity last spring while turkey hunting in unit....
So I might be turkey hunting a few days a week instead of bear hunting......
If I hear any hounds chasing bears in the area, :dunno:,........but will be turkey hunting....
If you think that makes me a poacher, I will repeat, I will be turkey hunting, not bear hunting.
The area is open for Turkeys 7 days a week April 15th until May 31st....
And unless I receive something in the mail telling me otherwise, Bear season is Weyerhaeuser land in unit 501 April 15th until June 15th, as my permit states.
The way things have been regarding communication, we will get the info sometime in June.....

Technically your permit states, "Open on days designated by Weyerhaeuser between APR 15 - June 15". It would be your responsibility to find out what those days are.

And "That portion of GMU 501 that is designated as the hunt area by Weyerhaeuser Company. So not all WeyCo land may be open and again, it would be your responsibility to find out what land is open.

I don't believe Weyerhaeuser is exactly easy to get a hold of, that's why they have that 866 hotline number. If they or the WDFW didn't send me any information in the mail regarding where and when I could hunt, I would assume the same as STIKNSTRINGBOW. I would assume by "designated" they are just meaning the areas with Weyerhaeuser signs stating that it is open to public access. Which is pretty much all the Weyerhaeuser land in the Lincoln unit. But, it sounds like there will be more info coming in the mail. So we'll just have to wait and see what kind of restrictions they have in store for the spring bear hunters.

With the term "designated" I would not assume all WeyCo is open. :dunno:

I called, I have e-mailed, I was told Weyerhauser lands are open to access...
I plan on Turkey hunting like I have for the last 3 years....
Accordind to their "forest Practices" division, green dot roads are open, stay away from active logging.

I am in the area I was informed was open, both by weyerhauser and WDFW, I would take the ticket to court...
Unless informed otherwise I would have a valid case......

I know that, I was just oversimplifying their recorded message....this is their e-mail response....

Hi Michael, In order to handle the hundreds of inquiries we receive each year regarding hunting and recreational access on Weyerhaeuser property we have set up a Public Access Hotline.
The hotline explains our recreational access policies and rules. There is also specific information, by tree farm, of what areas are open and closed for public access.
This hotline is updated regularly as necessary
The hotline number in Washington is 1-866-636-6531. Thank you. -----

I have people reference a couple times the season is April 15 - June 15.  The game regs say April 15 to May 31 for Lincoln A.
