100 gr. vs. 125 gr. 3-blade broadheads???
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:40:35 PM »
Just currious as to why one would use a 100 gr. vs. 125 gr.?  Just because they always have, or trying to make arrow weight?  One flies better than the next.  Just looking for some input.
I am shooting Montec 100 gr., 3-blade with a Beeman ICS Hunter 340 shaft with blazer veins.

for me i have to use the 125 "montec" to be legal with my hunting arrows. but some people also go to the bigger heads to gain cutting surface as well. also could be used to improve f.o.c in some cases as well that need more weight in the front.

I use a 125 because I wanted the extra weight, cutting diameter, foc,  and to get my arrow to spine out perfectly. I also heard randy ulmer talking about foc and he said the more you have the more penetration you get and arrow flight will be better.

I use the 100gn to make weight.  The arrows I shoot, nocked and fletched weigh in at about 370gn.

It mostly depends on your setup.  I like to stick with the 6 grains/pound of draw weight rule of thumb.  I was shooting 70 pound draw with 30 inch arrows so my arrows should have weighed 420 grains.  With the 125s that put me at 435.

I've since backed down a little on draw weight but kept the same arrow weight setup because it helps with the front of center balance and stiffens up the spine of the arrow.  My set up still spits out the arrows pretty quick at this weight (290fps).  I shot 100s in the past and they worked great as well, just a different setup with lower draw weight.

I like the extra weight too for that little extra "punch."  Although there's a lot of debate on heavier vs. faster arrows...  I like somewhere in the middle. :)

If your arrow is a little under spined I'd stick with the 100's

I wanted better FOC and also a little more weight in the front end.  I also tested the two tips to see which penetrated better at 10, 20 and 40 yds.  At 10 and 20 there was little to no difference.  At 40 yds though the 125 grain out penetrated my 100 grain heads every time.   :twocents:

Good info.  I have not test the penetration of the two.  I just know that all my 100 gr. set ups have sailed right through all the animals I have shot.  I will have to pick up some 125 gr and give them a test after the season.
