Elliot, the Mule Deer
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:32:33 PM »
Got skunked on Mulies this year, but after hiking all over, glassing, still-hunting for 6 hours my 11-year-old son & I returned to our rig and a mule deer was feeding 5 feet from our Jeep! :chuckle: we 1st spotted it from about 600-650 yards then kept on going & got to within 100 yards when it spooked because my nephew was closing the distance to it from below. We decided to name it Elliot from the cartoon Open Season, because it just seemed appropiate for it's behavior. and it fed right next to the rig for about 1/2 hour while we made our way to it. the 1st picture is zooming in as much as camera would allow so distance was considerable.

I tracked a huge buck two years ago with my late season tag.  I tracked it all the way back to my truck.  It walked within 3 feet of it.  Soooooo, I can relate.

Same thing happened to me general season a few years ago. Started snowing that morning and didn't see a thing. Made my way down to the road and followed some tracks straight back to my truck. Had I just sat in the truck I would have seen more and been warm all morning.

We camped in a Blacktail's front yard once. It snowed... And while we were gone, his tracks were in our bootprints in camp!  :yike:

Pretty cool that you saw that buck at distance though.
