No Birds down.  :(

Now that I have that out of the way, I just wanted to share how great of a trip I had taking my son on his first hunting trip carrying a gun.

Arrived Friday afternoon to set up camp and then to go visit someone I have chatted with on this site. My new friend was very gracious showing us around his house, introducing myself to his wonderful wife and sharing his insight on the area, which I have hunted before. We had a great short visit. ( We are truly a blessed group of sportsmen on this site, to have some folks who we can share with here daily...) I felt like I had known this person for years.

Saturday we hiked and hunted turkey on foot from 5am to 2pm. Returned to camp for a two hour break and then more hiking. We only had one gobbler respond to us briefly, the birds were very quiet.

Sunday nearly the same, worked one bird in the morning to no avail. Lots and lots of hiking. After breaking camp at 1:30, as we drove out of the woods, we finally pull out onto the country road to see a Tom standing 30 yards off the road.  A shootable bird on state land, 30 yards off the road. I told my son to crawl under the wire fence so I could slide under and load his shotgun.... After all the fussing around with the fence issue, the bird sauntered off. We cruised woods looking, but as you know...

Lessons learned. We spent alot of time talking about how some folks may have simply shot from the edge of the road, or on the wrong side of the fence.... All in all, he is not very upset at all. He wants to return all the more! (Just like Dad!)

We had a great time, learned some good lessons and made a new friend, was a great trip!

the good news is you've got another month and a half to go...you guys will get it done...sounds like a great weekend. what area of the  state were you in that they were pretty quiet?

ICEMAN:
 ;)  PM Sent...

Intruder:
Went out w/ 2 kids on Sat and 1 on Sun.  Lots of rain/snow and general misery.  Did have a couple chances but got foiled by dogs and horses on Sat.  Sunday we were really close.... had to birds coming in but just couldn't close the deal.

Gobble:
Ditto for me,

I took my son out on sat to the Teanaway and it was terrible  :(. Didn't see any birds and the snow was way too deep on the hills 2- 5 ft on the lowland hills and the wind was really blowing. Had one hen answer (we think) saw a couple of guys in the general direction of the hen, probably was them but hey we will give it the benefit of the doubt.

I'm looking for a place where my son can shoot his first turkey without tons of competition. If any of you have property or a place where he could get one feel free to PM me to rid the property of those pesky Toms  :chuckle:
