Where to go to shoot a can?
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:52:21 PM »
I live in SW Washington and hunt the Columbia all the time but all we ever shoot as far as divers is blue bills, buffle heads and golden eyes.  I hear they shoot some cans on the east side and was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some info.  Not looking for your honey hole or anything just a general area.  I am willing to return the favor and share some good spots over here if interested.  Feel free to PM if you want to keep it on the DL.  Thanks in advance!

I know of some cans my buddies got over on the east side this year, they normally kill a few over here every year.

We usually see a few cans out at the ponds we hunt on the eastside but the majority that we see are on the river. I never see them in great numbers so the ones I have shot were pretty lucky. I shot a really nice bull can a few years back. Was laying out taking a midday nap, happened to open my eyes and saw what I thought was a greenhead coming right at us not far off the deck. I sat up, dropped it and it ended up being a beautiful canvasback. I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.  :chuckle:

Thanks, I have heard that there are good opportunities around there.  I may have to do some scouting soon.

Well where I have been hunting is pretty far down river.  I hear of a few guys seeing some "canvasbacks" out in the estuary on occassion but I don't think they are as common as I have heard they are on the Columbia out east.  Do you know of an area that I don't?  I would love to increase my odds even if it means driving further.

I have been lucky this year as far as cans go. I think I have shoot one on all but 1 of my diver hunts. I will give you a hint, the Columbia from the mouth to just shy of Canada has cans!

Wow thanks, That pretty much narrows it down to several thousands of miles. Thanks for rubbing it in.
