pike?
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:54:49 AM »
I was just wondering when a guy should expect to be able to go out and catch some pike.  I know that in the summer time the reaction baits seem to bring in a few pike because of how aggressive they are, But i was just wondering  if anyone fishes for them earlier in the season ...say march 22 (spring break for me)

I would take a page out of the British Pike fisherman this early in the season.  They almost exclusively fish deadbait in the winter or for monster size pike.  Huge pike are almost completely scavengers.  They expend very little energy for their food other than easy targets of opportunity.  Dead bait like smelt, herring, mackerel are really good winter time baits.  I did a lot of pike fishing in the winter and have caught some huge fish around the 20 pound mark.  Where you thinking of going?

well the only 2 places i have heard of are Coeur d'alene and the Pend Oreille river (2 of the hardest bodies of water to spell) ...I have never dead baited before...what are the rules on it? ...if you catch perch in that body of water can you use them as bait? ...can you legally use herring or smelt...and you how do you rig them up? would a big bobber work? ....I bet you would need a leader though cuz with real food they probably have the thing half digested by the time the fight is on...

I use a wire trace and two treble hooks, one hook through the lip and one nicked in his back next to the dorsal fin.  I like a 6 to 8 inch steel leader from the hook in the lips.  Smelt and herring and mackerel are perfectly legal.  I think there are restrictions on using perch as a bait, but I'm not sure.  I always just use mackeral and herring, because they smell good to the pike and stays on the hook well for casting.  I like to make sure they are mostly frozen, or just slightly thawing.  There are pike in Long Lake, but I'm not sure if the numbers are high enough to warrent deadbait fishing for them.  There are also alot of pike in the lakes east of C'dA but they are probably frozen over still.  I don't use a bobber, but lots of British Fisherman do.  I get a hit, they run off line and then stop to turn the fish.  I usually wait a couple seconds after that and reel in extra line and set the hook as soon as I feel the fish.  Most of the time the pike is hooked in the mouth.  I have a excellent pike fishing book with detail rig photos and techniques that your more than welcome to borrow.

wow thanx i might have to hit you up on that! ...i want to go out during EWU's spring break towards the end of March and give it a shot.  I am by no means an expert and have only ever done the reaction fishing thing, but the few times i have caught pike it was a blast and they eat great too!
