Sage Rats!!! ????
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:20:17 AM »
hey everyone, got a couple questions about sage rats,  what time of year do they usually come out?  how long do they stay out?  and where would be my best chance to take my wife and kid out a couple times to kill some?  i know of a couple places between tri-cities and yakima,  aas soon as i get some time i'll go out there and try to talk to some land owners,   i'm mostly looking for area within 50-60 miles of tri-cities,

oh,  and yes i am aware that most sage rats are protected in washington, and i know wich ones i'm allowed to shoot or not,

also, it would be nice if some one would give me a couple places in idaho/oregon/montana where i could shoot some.  i might be making a couple camping trips with my little family to those states, and it would be awesome to know a couple places that we could swing by on the way.

thanks for any help,

p.s.  i won't be out shooting sage rats everyday, (don't have too much time)  but it would be nice to take my wife and kid a couple times just to try it out.    :)

Burns OR is like the Sage rat mecca that most people talk about.. I'm going this year... Can go anytime the snow melts off the hay fields... Some of the permission is just granted some allow camping and shooting for a fee.  :twocents: Not quite 50-60 miles tho

Be careful when shooting sage rats in Oregon. There is a $140 hunting license required unless you are an "agent" for the land owner. Best to get the permission in writing if the owner is not close by or you can get a ticket.
May you have a target rich environment!

I saw my first one of the year about 2 weeks ago.
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

My experience is that they seem to become more nocturnal when the days get hot.

PM me if you want to drive over to the Zillah/Sunnyside area and if my schedule permits I can get you on some pretty good shooting.
