My elkhorn came stock with the 209 breech plug(not legal in WA),you have to change to the breech plug that accepts #11 and musket caps (should have came with the riffle) the #11 is the smaller nipple and can shoot #11 and #11 magnums. They're not better, but they're not worse either. They're just different. The musket caps are "hotter" so COULD be more reliable in igniting your powder charge. But not necessarily. If your powder is wet I'm not sure one would do any better than the other. The musket caps are easier to handle because they're bigger so that might be an advantage. But if you use a capper with the #11's then their smaller size isn't really a hindrance at all. One advantage of the #11's over the musket caps is that they make a better seal against the nipple and I think for that reason water will not get in as easily, and if you want you can use wax to seal around the edge of the cap to make it completely waterproof. I don't believe that can be done with the musket caps. |
