Possible Camper trailer scam?
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:06:56 AM »
I saw an add on the Moses Lake Craigslist for a very nice looking bumper pull camper. It is a 2008 and from the two pictures in the add, it looks nice. Price $2400. I thought, to good to be true, but I emailed to request more info, and to possibly take a look at it. A little later, the add was pulled so I figured it sold. Well I got this e-mail back the next day. I think it a scam due to the seller being in one state and the camper in another. If this story is true, I am very sorry to the wife of a fallen soldier.

Hi, I am glad to know you're interested on my 2008 Keystone Springdale Summerland 1790, I want to get rid of this rv as fast as possible. I inherited the rv from my husband who died in Afghanistan last year. He was a soldier in the army corps peacekeeping detached.

The Camper has been sitting in the garage ever since, collecting dust, didn't move it an inch. My asking price is $2400. The camper is in perfect condition though, low used about 10 times near home but each time I try to get in, it kills me and makes me cry.. knowing how much he loved it and how much he babied it all the time makes me want to sell it even more. You may think I'm a terrible person but right now I'm pregnant in 4 months and I've been forced to relocate... moved back to Dell City, TX.

It sucks big time, but I'm hoping for the better.. that's that, I'm not going to take more of your precious time with my rant.. we'd better discuss the subject at hand.

I'm in no condition to travel, every time she moves my belly hurts and now my back is hurting.. I can barely walk.. I was told this was coming and just before leaving Denver, I left the camper with the shipping company (DAS) to be stored in their warehouse, sealed, ready to be delivered with all documents, clean and clear title signed by me, owner's manual and all the service records I could find with both sets of keys.

I've arranged so that shipping is free on your side, it's paid with a voucher issued by my insurance company to help me move but didn't use it because I didn't really have much to carry..Get back to me if you are interested in purchasing and we can have a smooth deal.

Bellow you can find the specs and features of the camper together with more pictures:

Sleeping capacity is 6 persons, dry weight (pounds) 3949, carry capacity 2041lbs, hitch weight 490, length 20'10", height 10'6", fresh water 50, waste water 30, gray water 30, LPG: 40, wheel size 14x5, rear bench dinette & huge window, front queen bed, dinette doubles a sleeper, 13.5 BTU A/C non-ducted, AM-FM-CD STEREO, TV shelf, TV antenna w/ booster & cable jack, extra large overhead cabinets,3-burner stove & LP oven, 6 CU. FT. Double door refrigerator, double bowl kit. sink w/ high rise faucet, microwave, hot water heater by-pass, side cabinet, A & E patio awning , 4x stabilizer jacks, C.O. detector, fire extinguisher, smoke detector, LP leak detector, hose carrier bumper w/ end caps, rubber roof, rain gutters, radial tires, dual L.P. tanks. Here is a link where you can find pictures with camper: http://keystonecampertt.shutterfly.com/pictures/77

Thank you and hope hear from you soon.

Best wishes Trisha B.

I agree, sounds fishy, if not, I apologize as well to the wife of a fallen soldier.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

It is a scam, got the same story about a Airstream Bambi that was for sale.  They gave their sob story and said they would only sell it through e-bay.  This was Seattle CL, found the same add same day in a California CL add after i got the email from seller.

I wouldnt worry  to much about it if thats all the info you gave them. People release waaaay more information that that ona daily basis on facebook to so called app developers, stuff like your b day, wedding aniversary family members names, fav pets, phone numbers, email, the list goes on and on.

But it is good you figured it out when you did i would flag the ad and contact somebody about your concerns.

BTW, that phone number is to the Seattle FBI office.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

What I will do is copy their Email address and then paste it into a google search. Many times you will see the same Email pop up in multiple cities.

Ran into this same situation about 6 months ago with my Sister.  She called me, told me about a similar Craigslist add in her area.  She thought it sounded too good to be true. She did all the research, correspondance and the guy even said he would bring the camper to her location, free of charge and no payment until he gets there.  Sounded really good and legit.  Until... I did the research.  The same camper was listed in nearly 10 different states, all said the same thing with all the same pictures with different usernames.  Hmm., then I found a post about the scam from someone who was scammed.  Dont remember the whole correspondane but my sister was in this pretty deep and ready to shell out the money.  Thank goodness, she didnt.

RUN!  Threaten, if needed and report it to Craigslist so they will pull the add.

I would have called him and told him to meet me some where public with the camper. If he showed up take pictures, write down licence info, names anything I could get. Then turn all of it over to the police.
